The history of Point Pleasant Shooting Club dates back to 1892. At that time, the area around Point Pleasant was a vast open tract of forest land. The founders of the club decided to establish a shooting ground on this property, and soon there were members from all over the town. In 1902, Point Pleasant Shooting Club became an affiliate of the New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Association (NRA). NRA membership greatly aided in the development of target shooting in Point Pleasant. In 1904, NRA president Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Point Pleasant and pronounced it “the cleanest place in America for target practice” because of its compliance with NRA regulations. In 1916, Point Pleasant Shooting Club was incorporated as a municipal corporation under the name “Pointpleasant Township Corporation” with a purpose “to promote sportive exercises at township expense without any discrimination against any class or race”. On February 8th, 1922, Borough Mayor John Coyle signed an ordinance establishing eligibility forhips with rifle ranges within borough boundaries subject to NRA regulation and approval by board of directors. This ordinance made possible rapid expansion of rifle range use within borough boundaries; point shootings quickly became one of traditional activities enjoyed by residents throughout our community!
