When Point Pleasant was founded in 1795, the area had not yet been explored by humans. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Point Pleasant were Dutch traders and missionaries. One of these missionaries, Pieter van der Sluis, set up a trading post at present-day Quaker Bridge on the Delaware River. Because of this, he was able to observe Indian land for many years and develop his theories about their way of life. One important factor that influenced van der Sluis' decision to settle in what is now Point Pleasant was his observation that the Indians used their eyes as part of their natural defenses against attack. He believed that if they could protect themselves with eyesight, they would be less likely to be attacked or killed by other groups who did not understand them. The first people to live in what is now Point Pleasant were Native Americans who called it "Turtle Hill." The area was first explored by European settlers in the early 1700s because it was rich in coal and other minerals. At first, the settlers only traveled through the area when necessary because there were no roads or trails available. However, over time, some of these early settlers began traveling farther into Indian Country for trade purposes and also took possession of property near present-day Point Pleasant Township and Turtle Creek County Park (now borough). In 1795, Englishman John Jones arrived at Turtle Creek from North Carolina with a group of colonists looking for new lands to explore. When he reached Point Pleasant Valley, he saw an abundance of coal mines and decided to stay here instead of continuing on until he found more valuable properties. In 1806, Jones sold his holdings along Turtle Creek Valley back to the Indians for $2 per acre ($60 total). This event marked an important turning point in the history ofPoint Pleasant because it allowed European settlement within Indian Country without having to worry about violating treaties or stealing tribal resources. In 1814, American Revolutionary War veteran Benjamin West moved from Philadelphia into northeastern Pennsylvania after hearing about land grants being offered for sale near Clearfield County (present-day Burlington). He bought some land near Clearfield Hillsborough Township (now Borough) on Long Branch Bayou before moving permanently inland towards Chambersburg several miles southward along PA Route 221 (the same route today used by I-79.) After settling down in Chambersburg proper and starting a farmstead called Westmoreland Manor (), West developed an interest in shooting sports which eventually led him to become a successful shooter at local events such as rifle shoots and air pistol competitions throughout central PA
