Point Pleasant is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of Bergen County. The first European settlers in Point Pleasant were Dutch immigrants who arrived there in 1664 as part of the Moravian community of Fort Christina. They named the place "Pelham" after Pelham Manor, their original homeland and site of worship. In 1714, English colonists from Rhode Island founded what would become Point Pleasant as they sailed upriver to find a new home for themselves after being rejected by Governor George Washington's choice for the location of a military post on Long Island Sound. The English name was chosen because it sounded like "pleasant" (a word derived from Old French "plein", meaning open). The earliest settlement at Point Pleasant was established on an island in what is now known as River Street between 1730 and 1735 by John Woolridge and his brother-in-law Peter Minnis. The Woolridge family had come overland from England two years earlier and built a house on an island near where they later landed when their ship reached North America. They may have been among the earliest Europeans to settle in present-day Point Pleasant Township when they platted it out under grants from the state government in 1739-40; it included all or most of what are today's Points Pleasant Township, Borough of Paramus, Hunterdon County and portions of Union City and Sayreville boroughs within Morris County. In 1802, traders Gouverneur Morris and Richard Stockton discovered oil seeps along the Passaic River near Princeton; soon thereafter petroleum began being extracted from nearby Prospect Hill (now Downtown Princeton). As production increased, wealthy landowners developed homes around Prospect Hill so that workers could live close to their jobs instead of commuting long distances each day for work at distant sites. By 1811 about 100 people lived in arearounding hills north of Prospect Hill; during that same period land southeast of that point became available for residential development eastward into Union City through purchase or donation by Major Jameson & Company." Meanwhile, other parts of New Jersey were experiencing rapid growth thanks to new transportation routes created by Commodore John Stevens' Purchase project: traffic congestion caused by flooding during wintertime had been solved with a canal system connecting various points along northern Manhattan with Great Lakes ports on Lakehurst and Perth Amboy—all without mention made about potential solutions such as improvements to Route 1A which ran through those areas unimpeded."
