The name of Point Pleasant comes from an incident on December 9, 1764 when British Rear Admiral John Graves Simcoe and his forces attacked what would become known as the Battle of Point Pleasant during the French and Indian War. The town was founded on May 7, 1781 by General Jameson Callender as a small station on the East Coast between Trenton and Princeton. By 1834 it had grown to about 1,000 residents and became a borough in 1835. In 1885 it became an independent city with a mayor and council system. In 1912 it merged with Newton Township to form Point Pleasant Borough again. Prior to its incorporation into borough status in 1912, Point Pleasant functioned as one of five townships inHunterdon County which were all granted township status based on their population size (the others being West Amboy Township; Plainfield Township; South Hackensack Township; Union City Township). On February 22, 1955 Borough President Harry Sutter announced that all five townships would be abolished and that Point Pleasant would be re-incorporated within Hunterdon County as a borough presidency was created with responsibility for all municipal services including police protection etc., except for street cleaning which would remain with each township's respective policewoman/managers until such time that civil service reform moved municipalities like Pointpleasant out of state from county government jurisdiction altogether so their responsibilities could can be managed centrally by countywide staffs - this finally happened on March 2nd 1957 when both Plainfield Township (which took over night operations from Borough President Sutter) and South Hackensack Township ceded full independence to Hunterdon County authorities effective immediately effective through merger ceremonies attended by Mayor Harry Sutter personally - these two townships have since then been completely separate municipalities (South Hackensack has since reverted back to Boroughstatus while Plainfield remains an unincorporated community). As per Census reporting dated 2000: In 2000 pointpleasant had a total population of 775 which included 514 male residents and 479 female residents
