In the early 1800s, Point Pleasant was a small community on the Delaware River in southeastern New Jersey. The area now includes the town of Point Pleasant and portions of Burlington, Warren, and Morris counties. The original settlers were Dutch people who arrived in 1664. They founded a trading post on the riverbank near what is now called “The Battery” and developed a small agricultural society. Point Pleasant grew rapidly during the 19th century because of its location on an important trade route between Philadelphia and New York City. Shipbuilding and fishing became major businesses in Point Pleasant after 1825 when Commodore John Stevens built his wharf here to service both ports. In 1838,Point Pleasant became one of two towns in Essex County (the other being Edison) that voted to secede from New Jersey and form their own state; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Point Pleasant's growth as an independent municipality. During World War II, Point Pleasant played an important role as a military airfield for pilots training at nearby Willow Grove Air Base. After World War II ended, many new businesses moved into Pointpleasant including clothing stores, restaurants, movie theaters, pharmacies, some light industrial plants and office buildings which continue to operate today. Point Pleasant is a small town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hackensack Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of Point Pleasant comes from two locations: "Pleasant" meaning "peaceful and quiet" and "Hill" because its location on a hillock made it an ideal place to live and conduct business. The first permanent settler arrived in 1775, when General George Washington's army passed through this area on their way to battle against the French in Quebec City. Captain John Meacham built his house on what is now Post Road (now Route 11) about east of where the Battle of Princeton currently stands. State Senator Nicholas Scranton officiated at Meacham's incorporation as a township in 1814; however, no village was ever founded until Point Pleasant Township was created by act of Congress in 1837. The early days were difficult for Point Pleasant due to its location along an important trade route between Philadelphia and New York City. However, over time the township became known for its fertile farmland, picturesque villages such as Cross Keys and Hillsborough Village, and access to NJ Transit transportation which allowed residents easy access to both major cities without having to leave their homes. In 1916 First Lady Woodrow Wilson visited Point Pleasant during her honeymoon; she enjoyed visiting Cross Keys Manor which she called "the most perfect little farmhouse I have ever seen." In 1937, President Franklin D Roosevelt traveled through Sussex County for a campaign stop before he left for New York City; he stayed at the White House West Wing where he had dinner with Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and Mr. James Fenton who ran the presidential press office at that time; they attended church services at Mount Zion Baptist Church located across from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW before going back home for dinner with family members including daughters Eleanor Roosevelt Hyman235and Alice Paul226). After his visit to America's largest city FDR announced plans to build new housing projects throughout America which would eventually include Point Pleasant Township – one of six townships nationwide receiving federal funding under federally sponsored Housing Opportunity Opportunities Program (HOPE). During World War II many local businesses closed due primarily to shortages caused by wartime production rates but some reopened after the war ended while others went out of business entirely due primarily to inflationary pressures brought about by wartime prices hikes coupled with post-war recession . Many residents also lost their jobs during or immediately after World War II as well as following rapid suburbanization that took place throughout much of America due in part to government subsidies given exclusively to military-industrial complexes . Over time many residents have moved away from Point Pleasant making it one of Sussex County's smallest towns with only 815 people living there as of 2010 censusaged . Although not directly related thereto, many aspects associated with Main Street - such as several convenience stores dotting its center - still remain operational unchanged since they opened more than seventy years ago!
