The first gun target in Point Pleasant, New Jersey was established on May 17, 1825 by Capt. Nicholas Young of the U.S. Marines. The target was a large cannonball which could be shot at with pistols and cannonballs during military drills at the fort. The targets were destroyed every week until 1828 when they were replaced by cannons. In 1851, the original cannons were retired and replaced by new guns which still exist today. The Point Pleasant Gunnery School was founded in 1863 and served as a training ground for artillerymen from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It is now known as Princeton University’s Artillery Range and Museum located adjacent to Old Fort Asbury Park.

Smith and delivered to Point Pleasant on July 5, 1876. It consisted of two cars with 20 guns apiece and ran between Philadelphia and Atlantic City.

Point Pleasant was founded in 1788 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife, Rachel. The town of Point Pleasant was named for the small point on the Jersey Shore where they first landed. settlers soon began to arrive and develop Point Pleasant, which became a thriving mill town with a population of around 100 in 1800. In 1814, Point Pleasant became part of New Brunswick Township. In 1838, Point Pleasant officially incorporated as a borough. The borough experienced some growth during the late 19th century as it attracted immigrants from Eastern Europe who were looking for a new home and opportunities to start their own businesses. However, many residents left Pointpleasant after World War I because of the high cost of living and limited job opportunities in the area. In 1923, Point Pleasant merged with neighboring Bedminster Township to form what is now known as Bridgeport Township. Despite this merger being opposed by some residents who felt that sharing resources would lead to more integration between the two townships, it ultimately passed muster with most people involved believing that it would be beneficial for both communities overall. The township has seen significant growth over the years; in 1951 it gained statehood as part of New Jersey; in 1992 it amalgamated with Easton Township to form Bridgeport-Easton Township; and finally in 2006 it merged with Dumont Borough (to become Dumont-Bridgeport Township). These years have seen increased development along Route 913 within its borders as well as an increase in population density due to ongoing suburbanization throughout Morris County. All things considered, there has been no negative effect on Point Pleasant’s status quo – despite having undergone numerous changes over time – since its incorporation into municipality status in 1992.
The first Europeans to venture onto the New Jersey shoreline were Dutch traders in 1609. The area now known as Point Pleasant was part of what was then called Monmouth County. In 1764, the British established a trading post on the site and named it Fort Cumberland after King George III of England. For many years, Fort Cumberland served as the only European outpost on the Jersey Shore. In 1814, Americans captured Fort Cumberland during the War of 1812 and renamed it Point Pleasant for General James K. Polk, who had commanded American forces in that war. The new name stuck and reference to Fort Cumberland is still used today in local media listings for events or locations related to that military installation.
