In 1829, two men by the name of Davenport and Whitman discovered oil reserves in what is now Princeton Township. They soon began drilling rigs and selling oil to local farmers. In 1832, John Stevens founded Stevens Institute of Technology at what is nowPrinceton University. This event helped spur the development of Princeton Township and Point Pleasant itself into larger communities. In 1865, when Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant liberated Point Pleasant from Confederate forces during the American Civil War, they destroyed many homes in the townscape in order to make it easier for civilians to flee war-torn areas. As a result of this action,Point Pleasant quickly regained its pre-war status as a small town with few residents.
On March 17, 1814, Point Pleasant became the site of the first permanent British settlement in what is now New Jersey. The town was founded by Captain John Smith and his men on a peninsula near Monmouth Bay. The town grew rapidly after it was made the capital of Princeton County in 1824. In 1828, Point Pleasant became the capital of New Jersey when Trenton moved from Princeton to become the state's new capital. The town is located on the southern tip of Newark Bay and is bordered by Boundary Street to its east, Union Avenue to its south, and Mercer Street to its north. The population of Point Pleasant peaked at 25,000 in 1850 but declined following multiple waves of migration to cities in New Jersey during the mid-19th century. However,Point Pleasant has since experienced a resurgence with growth in container shipping and tourism as well as extensions into adjacent unincorporated areas such as East Newark and West Orange. The Town Hall Building (now known as Borough Hall) was built in 1898 and is one of several municipal buildings located within walking distance of each other in Point Pleasant Borough. It features an art deco style design which was popular at that time. As part of celebrations marking American independence on July 4th this year (2017), a re-enactment taking place at points throughout Point Pleasant Borough will feature Revolutionary War era clothing and gear for all residents who are interested in participating – including children!

Point Pleasant, NJ is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 Census. Point Pleasant is known for its colonial architecture and its location on the Sassafras River. The first residents of Point Pleasant were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They built a small log cabin on the riverbank and named it "Zandvoort". In 1714, English colonists established a trading post at Point Pleasant. The name was changed to "Point Pleasant" in 1736 because of its strategic position on the Sassafras River. In 1814, Phinehas Wright founded Wrightstown as an agricultural community near Point Pleasant. He used his land holdings to build a mill which he operated until 1828. In that year, he sold his property to George Washington Custis for $10,000 dollars. Custis used the mill to make flour for Confederate troops during the American Civil War. In 1847, John Pemberton purchased Wrightstown from Custis and renamed it Point Pleasant Village after himself and his wife Virginia Pemberton. The village had a school, churches (two Methodists), a storehouse and two residences by then-Governor James Kneeland Jr.. It declined in popularity after World War II due to competition from larger towns such as West Orange and Edisonville but has regained some popularity over the last few years due to nostalgic reasons or as part of initiatives sponsored by local businesses or organizations such as Historic Preservation Foundation of New Jersey (HPFNJ) or Mercer County Historical Society (MCHS). The original white sandstone buildings included three frame houses completed between 1824 and 1830 by William Hazen Mason along with brick barracks serving as guardhouse/ jail until 1840 when they were replaced by stone walls using slave labor while still under construction; these structures are now individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places After America's victory in World War I there was little need for military garrison so Dumont Iron Works took over production line making cannons effective against V-2 rockets developed by Nazi Germany beginning 1945 This led to abandonment of village Greenfield Road with only 3 dwellings remaining when development resumed following war closure; however 2 have since been restored including one house that served as shop/ residency into early 1960s
Point Pleasant was first settled in 1738 by the French and English. The town was named after General George Washington, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1814, Point Pleasant was incorporated as a borough. In 1868, Point Pleasant became an independent city.
