Point Pleasant is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The name "Pleasant" was given to the town by Commodore John Stevens because of its fertile soil and peaceful atmosphere. The first Europeans to find and map what is now Point Pleasant were Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and his crew on his ship "Vincenzo". They named it Naxos after their captain's home island of Niçoise. The first permanent settler in Point Pleasant was Nicholas Brendon who arrived in 1714 with his family from Rhode Island. He built a series of tannery farms around what is now known as West Side Road and then donated land for public school purposes which became East Side Road today. In 1772, Captain George Washington inspected Fort Cumberland at Point Pleasant after being forced to leave New York due to the revolutionary war. He chose this site as his Headquarters because it offered strategic advantages such as a long frontier coastline and its position between two major rivers; Susquehanna River on the east side and Delaware River on the west side. A smallpox epidemic that struck America during this time killed more people than any other disease ever recorded, so Drs Benjamin Rush and Peter Cooper developed an early vaccine against smallpox which they patented in 1793 under the name “PROTECTIVE DYE” A post office calledpleasant was established in 1807 by James Pemberton with assistance from General Philip Schuyler In 1812, when Morrisania Township (now West Windsor Heights) was formed from parts of Sussex County, Pleasant became a separate township within that county . In 1831, when Sussex County split into Middlesex County (north), Union County (south), and Essex County (west), Pleasure became one of five townships located within those new counties In 1883, when both Middlesex County (north) and Essex County (west) were disbanded, Pleasure remained within Essex County until 1923 when it became one of four townships located within newly created Hunterdon County Since its inception as a township pleasant has grown steadily with over 6 square miles added each year including: portions of Bridgewater Township (1906), Caldwell Township (1920), Rahway Township(1925), South Brunswick Township(1932), Sayreville Borough* (* later Sayreville Borough ) Today Point Pleasant remains one Of The most vibrant communities located partially outside OFJE services while still keeping close ties to our larger municipality

The town was named for General George Washington, who had given it to the British in recognition of their support during the American Revolution. The first settler in Point Pleasant was Nicholas Negrete. In 1814, Point Pleasant became a township and in 1824, a village. In 1844, Point Pleasant became a borough and in 1898, it became a city. When Lieutenant Colonel George Washington arrived at Manhattan from England on July 4th, 1776 as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear5 he found himself at the mercy of Native Americans3: “In Pennsylvania we had vanquished these savages; here they lay terrorizing our settlers and taking what plunder they could carry off4. We made great efforts to exterminate them; but their numbers too soon grew so numerous that we could not keep them under control5-6” This situation changed when Lieutenant Colonel Washington secured his army’s passage across Long Island Sound7 onto Staten Island8 on October 27th,177610-11 and moved into new barracks at Westchester Manor12 which served as an ideal location for his military forces13: “Here we quartered our troops until winter forced us back to our old quarters on Staten Island14-15…we enjoyed all the advantages of security and good water supply16 which Providence had so generously provided17” From this new location high atop Staten Island LtCol Washington continued to lead operations against British forces18: On January 8th 1777 he led an attack against Lord Cornwallis’ main encampment near White Plains19 where he personally destroyed over 100 rebel officers20: On February 15th 1777 LtCol Washington again fought Lord Cornwallis at Bedloe21 where he achieved some impressive feats such as sinking 5 large warships22: And finally on April 6th 1777 LtCol Washington again led an attack against Cornwallis near Peekskill23 resulting in another significant victory25: These successes eventually earned him the title “The Hero of Saratoga27″ As America began its journey towards independence from Great BritainLtCol Washington remained a critical figure within America’s fledgling government28-29:, He played an important role during both the Continental Congress30-31andtheFirstNationalCongress31 (May 14– May 25), serving as chairman32-33andvicechairman34oftheCommitteeonPropertyowners35(July 10– August 2). He also helped negotiate important treaties with Great Britain36 (TreatyofParis37)andFrance38 (TreatyofNantes39). In recognition of his accomplishments as commander in chief during this time period Lt ColWashington was briefly considered for appointment as Ulysses S Grant40butwasnever offered the position because President George Washington felt that lieutenant colonel level experience would not be appropriate for Grant41′42 After successfully leading America through its earliest yearsLt ColWashington returned home to Virginia43butcontinued to hold key positions throughout Virginias political hierarchy44-. During this time he served as delegate to several Constitutional conventions45-, governor46-, congressman47-, member49‐50andstate senator51-. Finally after nearly two decades away from public service Lt Col Washinngton died suddenly52 on February 12th 180153 leaving behind him a legacy of enduring patriotism and commitment to public service.- Upon his death Emeritus Professor James Fenton wrote “He [Washinngton] left behind him one sidereal monument—namely His unbroken spirit yearning constantly for more effective work than ever before done by men fighting under Flag and Constitution—to be pitted against any obstacle or difficulty that may come hereafter· To those who knew him best—he was truly one of God's own creation54″
Prior to the Revolutionary War, Point Pleasant was a small hamlet on the Delaware River. The area now known as Point Pleasant was first settled by English colonists in 1682. In 1764, the British moved their military encampment from Princeton to Point Pleasant and renamed it Fort Monmouth after Monmouth County, New Jersey. The fortifications were abandoned in 1775 and used as artillery pieces during the American Revolution. In 1814, General John Burgoyne's army landed at Camden on Long Island and marched along the shore of Philadelphia into Pennsylvania. On September 13, 1814, Burgoyne's army crossed into New Jersey at Elizabethtown and stopped at Fort Mifflin before marching northeast toward Washington D.C.. On October 12th, 1814, while encamped near Morristown under cover of darkness, Burgoyne's force was attacked by 3 battalion-sized militia forces commanded by Colonel James Wilkinson who fought valiantly but lost most of his men including Wilkinson himself.
