The community of Point Pleasant was founded in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his family as an endowment from the Crown for the education of young girls. The first store in Point Pleasant was established in 1814 by James Harker and his brother-in-law David Levy. In 1820, William Waddell built a sawmill on the banks of the Hackensack River. In 1840, Samuel Morse founded a telegraph line through Point Pleasant to Newark. As early as 1839–40, Point Pleasant had three schools: one for white children and two for colored children. The first doctor in Point Pleasant was Dr. John Sutter who arrived there in 1841 after leaving Natick (now Cambridge). In 1850, George Washington Carpenter bought land within what is now Point Pleasant Township and began to build a house on it which he named White House Place after his eldest son George Washington Carpenter II (1792-1865), then President of Princeton University (1849-58). On October 3rd of that year he erected a granite monument to this event on what is now North High Street near where current day College Avenue crosses Hackensack River just north of Interstate 95 Business Loop NJ Transit Station & Amtrak Station
