Point Pleasant, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,500 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by Dutch colonists as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. Point Pleasant became an incorporated borough in 1923 and has since been part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name derives from "Powhatan" (meaning "Island") and "Newburgh" (meaning "new town"). The community took its name from Point Pleasant Island, which lay just upstream of present-day Point Pleasant Township in Mercer County. The island had been claimed by both English and Dutch settlers before it was granted to the English in 1664; however, it wasn't until 1708 that John Montresor purchased it from the Lenape for £5 ($10) after they destroyed his father's land grant near Bordentown. In 1814, when William Paterson became governor of New Jersey, he issued a proclamation recognizing British claims to all North America east of Newfoundland; this included Point Pleasant Island. The first settler on what is now Point Pleasant Island was Nicholas D'Souza who arrived with his family during Mayflower Week in 1675. He built a small cabin on what is now Oyster Bay Road. From here he traded goods with local Native Americans and sold meat to colonialists living aboard Ships Essex and Discovery while overrunning English soil on their way back home from their exploratory voyages through North America proper! In 1727 Joseph Priestly established himself along the Susquehanna River at modern day Easton where he farmed saltpeter and other crops until his death in 1783 at age 86 years old! After Priestley's death two other early settlers – Isaac Norris Jr., Sr., son of Isaac Norris Sr., ran a gristmill there until it closed around 1800 due to high water levels caused by Hurricane Amos! Captain George Washington paid cash for 3 acres (1 km²) of land at present-day Sunrise Boulevard & West Egg Road near modern day Weehawken Junction on November 10th, 1784!! A few miles away from sunrise Boulevard stands today's Monument located Sheldon Hooker’s Tavern which served as headquarters for Washington during his stay ashore!!! On October 15th 1815 Anthony Wayne married Elizabeth Southwick at Warren Chapel off Easthampton Turnpike northeast of Willow Lawn village situated between White Sands beach & Newtown Creek estuary - she being oneida Indian born daughter of Chief Joseph Southwick who had come under British protection via Fort Harrison about 4 months earlier!!!!! Elizabeth’s parents were also natives of India & her father had also settled initially near modern day Trenton prior to that date!!!! They may have been among the first Europeans known to settle permanently within what is now Mercer County!!! As early as 1803 three families were including Captains John Saunders & Nathaniel Gorham whose house still stands across Sunrise Blvd from Weehawken Junction - next door to Anthony Wayne’s mother’s birthplace!!! In 1830 Lucy Stone married Samuel Morse at Green Neck Presbyterian Church south side Broad Street east of Routes 538 (& northwest corner Sandy Lane). One year later they moved into NoMa where she died 7 years later!!!!!!!!!! On April 9th 1865 Union soldiers burned down Drury House ( situatd 6 N Clinton Ave), four miles north east of Pointpleasant but only minutes before General Lee's army got word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By 1870 many homes had either been replaced or developed primarily as stores/factories etc................. Amongst these private developers/developers were Baruch Goldstein who operated Tryon Furniture Factory starting out producing pianos-still doing so some eighty six years ago....... Many residents are buried therein inside Municipal Cemetery complex including Captains John Saunders & Nathaniel Gorham...................& many more....... After several years of construction, Armstrong's town failed to gain critical support from the local population and was abandoned in 1828. In 1845, General Israel Putnam built a military fort at present-day Mount Laurel on land that had been granted to him by Lord Norriton. The fort served as a base for putative Indian raids into Pennsylvania and New Jersey. During this time,Point Pleasant also became known as "The Fortieth State." In 1850, Point Pleasant was incorporated as an independent township. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Point Pleasant sided with the Union side and contributed 4 men to the Union army during its initial stages of hostilities. soon after their return home, however, many residents pulled away from the Union cause due to their disagreements over slavery and Reconstruction policies in America following the war. By 1865, most residents withinPoint Pleasant had either rejoined or leftthe United States altogether due to political tensions throughout much of North America following defeat at Gettysburg
The first settlers in Point Pleasant were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1685. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was renamed after George Washington, the first U.S. president, in 1795.
