In 1814, George Washington came through Pointspleasant with his army during the Peninsular War and stopped at Sparks' place for dinner. In 1832, John Dunkerf used some land leased from Nicholas Caruso to build a gristmill on which he operated until 1840 when he sold it to James Haddonfield (brother of Amos Haddonfield). In 1844, Daniel Webster became United States Senator from New Jersey and stopped at sparks' house while on his way back from Newark Castle where he was attending an inauguration ceremony. In 1896, Ebenezer Scudder bought 8 acres south of Main Street for $2 per acre; this area later became Point Pleasant Township Square which includes most of today's Point Pleasant including its two main streets (Aurora Road and Summit Avenue) as well as several other streets that divide the township into smaller blocks or neighborhoods. After serving two terms as Mayor O’Neill ran for Ulysses S Grant’s presidential campaign in 1916 but lost against incumbent Woodrow Wilson 54%-46%. However Point Pleasant had effectively been turned into an all white town during O’Neill’s term as mayor despite having black residents living inside its limits

In 1868, Point Pleasant incorporated as a Borough. The name comes from an early settler's home on the edge of town which had been called "Pleasant Hill". In 1907, construction began on what would become one of America's largest steel mills, located on the southern border of Point Pleasant Borough. At its peak production that year (1907), the mill employed 614 people and produced 5 million tons of steel products. The mill closed its doors in 1964 after experiencing heavy competition from other mills around New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Today only remnants of it remain - a foundation still stands at the entrance to the abandoned factory complex across from Interstate 280Exit 378B). Point Pleasant has several notable landmarks dating back to its earliest days as a township: Meeting House (1664), Old Brick Church (1821), Schoolhouse No 1 (1868), Lion's Head Tavern (1893-1903) and American Legion Post 901 (1927), among others. In 1907, construction began on what would become one of America's largest steel mills; however operations stopped due to heavy competition from other mills in New Jersey and Pennsylvania by 1964.
