The town was first settled by German refugees who had fled persecution in their homeland during the Revolutionary War. The community of Point Pleasant sprang up around what is now the downtown area of town. The original homes were built near where the Delaware Canal meets the river. When this section of the canal was filled in by developers in the early 1900s, they shortened the name to "Point Pleasant". Today'sPoint Pleasant was formed when two other villages consolidated into one municipality: Northumberland and Easton Township on May 1, 1957. At that time, it contained 4 villages (Adamsboro, Arlington Centre, Bethel Springs, and Harrington Heights) with a total population of 18,856 people The original Post Office building still stands today as part of Point Pleasant Village Hall which served as both its primary office and meeting place for over 50 years until it burned down in 2007. In honor of its long history as an important community center for residents and businesses alike Pointpleasant village hall will be renamed Borough Hall starting on January 1st 2020 . In 1755 , after fleeing persecution from his home country during King George II's American Revolution., Johann Gottfried Wilhelm von Steuben arrived here with his family to start anew life among new friends and neighbors who would become known as "the Pioneers." After only a few short months he announced that he was returning to Germany because he saw too much violence happening there; what he didn't know is that British troops were already waiting for him at Fort Christina on Ruger Island just upstream from where we stand today! On September 12th 1755 , Captain John Smith stopped his ship off shore at point called 'Pleasant' about4 miles due east from present day Camden NJ Genealogical research done recently shows that this spot was actually called 'Dingwall' or 'Dingwall Beach'. According to local historian Dr Eric Gorski Dingwall may have been named after Sir William Denton who owned land at Dover Beach along with many others including Samuel Morse also located on Dingwall beach hence why 'Dingwall' became popularized throughout times as an identification point forPLEASE NOTE - This information is based upon historical records which are subject to revision! In 1814, General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga Battlefield, and Point Pleasant became part of New York state. Today Point Pleasant is a sleepy little town with a population of only about 1,000 people. However, its history goes much further than that – it has been home to some of the most important events in American history! The first significant event that took place in Point Pleasant occurred when British troops under Lieutenant Colonel William Howe burned down the village of Monmouth Junction on December 14th, 1778. This action set off a series of skirmishes between British and American forces that continued for several months. Ultimately, Howe's force was driven back and Monmouth Junction was saved by an American victory over him at Buskirk's Ford on January 7th,. One other significant event took place here during this time: the Battle of Princeton which took place on September 26th,. Commodore John Paul Jones' squadron commanded by Rear Admiral Samuel Dewey destroyed a large army led by French general de Lussac attacking America's second largest city; Princeton (then called Trenton). After this victory Jones moved his headquarters from Newport News to Morristown where he remained until his death two years later aboard USS Constitution (1806-1809). This battle also demonstrated greatlythe technological advances made by United States Naval Officers during this period; for example Dewey had his shipboard cannons manned by Marines instead of sailors who would have been killed if fired upon by the French artillerymen
On Point Pleasant, in 1764, the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe founded a small community known as "Point Pleasant" after landing on what is now New Jersey. The community grew rapidly, and by 1812 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, the town was renamed Princeton because of its location at the confluence of the Monmouth and Trent rivers. The town's growth stalled during the 1830s due to heavy immigration from England and Irish refugees who were fleeing poverty and political instability in their home countries. However, Princeton recovered during the 1840s when new railroad lines arrived and settlers moved in to escape technological unemployment in Great Britain. During this time, Princeton became one of the most prestigious towns in New Jersey because it attracted wealthy English-speaking families looking for a tranquil nook away from noisy cities. Despite this status quo, Princeton experienced dramatic growth during the late 19th century due to industrialization – its population increased from about 30 people in 1800 to over 1,000 by 1900 – thanks to its location on an important trade route between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. In 1925, Princeton became an incorporated city with full voting rights; it has since undergone several expansions (including annexations of smaller towns) that have brought its population up to over 6,000 people today.
