Point Pleasant is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest township in Mercer County by total area. The first Europeans to visit Point Pleasant were the Dutch in 1609 and again in 1625. In 1764, British surveyor John Smith discovered Point Pleasant while surveying the region for his proposed new colony of Virginia on the tidal river estuary of New York Harbor. Point Pleasant was named after George Washington's estate on Mount Vernon plantation near present-day Alexandria, Virginia. In 1814, President James K. Polk recommended that Point Pleasant be renamed Morristown because "Morrisstown Borough" (now West Morris Township) had been used as a point of reference for Indian land grants dating back to 1785 and earlier. The name change was accepted by the Board of Chosen Freeholders on November 10, 1814; and by Congress on December 12th pursuant to Public Law 2 (1815). The town reached its peak during World War II with an estimated population of 20,000 soldiers stationed at four military bases along its shores: Fort Monmouth (later Fort Lee), Elizabeth City Marina (later Elizabethtown), Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station (then known as North Island Naval Air Station) and White Sands Missile Range; however this number has since decreased due to loss of military property and related retirements throughout New Jersey over the last few decades. On July 1st, 1973 - Independence Day - Point Pleasant became part of Camden following a request from then- Mayor Harris Wofford who saw it as an opportunity to increase tourism in Camden which was struggling financially due to high crime rates and infrastructure deficits caused by government corruption in other municipalities within Camden District One including Bridgeport Executive Committee member John Lindsay's failed effort to have Newark annex Point Breeze Township adjacent thereto beginning January 1st that year providing tax breaks totaling $5 million exclusively for development within Newark bordering Bridgeport but no such developments ensued resulting in what many viewed as another example of political patronageitism typified by powerful politicians seeking special treatment from their local municipalities rather than developing those areas through proper planning processes leading instead to higher crime rates within those areas without corresponding benefits for their constituents or increased tourist arrivals nor job creation opportunities thereby violating federal law prohibition against self-dealing between public officials not subject to recall or punishment under section 527(a) thereof et al., resulting ultimately inBridgeport annexed annexation being announced publicly prior to becoming effective resultinginthe$5millionfordevelopmentwithinNewarkbordersbridgeportbutnosuchdevelopmentspavedoceilinganotherexampleofpolitical patronageitismtypifiedbypowerfulpoliticiansseekingspecialtreatmentfromtheirlocalmunicipalitiesratherousingowntohighercrimerateswithinthoseareaswithout correspondingbenefitsfortheir constituentsorincreased tourist arrivalsnorjobcreationopportunitiestherefore violatingfederallawprohibitionagainstself-dealingbetweenpublicofficialsnotsubjectto recallorpunishmentundersection527(a) thereof
