According to2010 U.S Census estimates, Point Pleasant also has one of Monmouth County's highest percentages (45%)of black citizens living below poverty line including all incomes up through $24k or less while only 25%of white residents fall within this category

Point Pleasant was founded on November 3, 1758 by Captain John Stevens as "Leesburg". On December 12, 1776, during the American Revolution, a detachment of British marines under Rear Admiral Richard Stockton attacked and burned down what is now the Stevens Institute of Technology in nearby Neptune Township. In 1835 Point Pleasant became an incorporated village with a population of 812 people. The town then merged with Cape May Township on March 1st of that year to form one municipality with a total population of 9,619 residents. The first settler in Point Pleasant was Nicholas Jaffray who arrived in 1758 from London via Perth Amboy and Pompton Lakes. His wife Hannah had also come overland from England and they built their home on Church Street near today's Post Office (now known as Easton Avenue). Other early settlers included Cornelius Van den Bergh who settled on Belle Mead Road between present-day North Brunswick Avenue and Bordentown Avenue; his son Pieter moved to Newtown Creek along what is now South Brunswick Boulevard; James Prentice located himself on Meeting House Road between Hudson's Bay Company land east of Broadwalk (now Lightner Boulevard) and West Orange Street; Isaac Smith located himself along the border of this current township line where Asbury Park now stands; finally George Washington leased 400 acres from Dutchman Hendrick Van der Boom for $60 per year in 1778 when he became President of America.
