The town of Pleasantville, New Jersey was founded in 1814 by the merger of two small settlements, Pleasantville and Newtown. The name “Pleasantville” is derived from an Indian word meaning “happy place.” In 1830, a post office was established in the town and it continued to be named after its founders until 1927. During World War II, the town developed into a munitions production center as part of the New Jersey armories that produced weapons for both Allied and Axis forces. Some of the most famous rifles manufactured here include the Thompson M1 Garand and Winchester Model 70. Afterwar development in Pleasantville included various businesses such as a winery, shoe store, car dealership and more. In recent years, Pleasantville has seen some growth as an area with opportunities for shopping, dining and recreation. One popular attraction is the newly renovated train station which opened in 2017.

The village had also a total population of 579 according to Census 2000 data but that figure dropped to 514 by 2006 when the village lost its status as an incorporated municipality due to declining tax revenue from businesses within its borders. Pleasantville is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Pleasantville were Native Americans. They were the Lenape tribe and they hunted and gathered wild plants and animals that they used for food. In 1694, David Salter established a small farming community on the east side of what is now Pleasantville Lake. He named it after his home village of Piscataway, New Jersey. In 1867, a group of men from nearby Paramus started to build a dam on Morris River so they could generate power for irrigation purposes. When they finished their project, they found that the water level in their reservoir had decreased so much that they couldn't use it to irrigate their fields anymore and had to sell the land to farmers around town. Later on, John Anderton built a mill on Black Horse Creek near where he lived with his family until 1865 when he sold it to George Stephenson for $1 million dollars! The mill produced flour, paper products, boots and shoes until 1978 when it closed down due to debts incurred by heirs of Stephenson's business partner John Dorman Jr.. In 1909-10 two farms called Maple Hill were built about four miles west of town by local farmer Halsey Dickinson as part of an effort to increase production in an area which was being devastated by drought conditions caused by bad weather patterns coming out of Europe. These farms remain today as part of the Pleasantville Agricultural Society land grant program administered by the NJ Department Of Agriculture & Markets. In 1916 there was also construction done on what is now known as West Side Drive (later Boulevard) which connected downtown with Maple Hill Farms and other townships across Sussex County including Easton Township which became Pleasantville through merger with Middlesex Township in 1922; Easton then became boroughship within Sussex County followingNJ statehood in 1978; and finally township status was bestowed upon Pleasantville through merger with Rahway Township in 1984). Today's map showing this area refers only to parts north/west of Interstate 95 while older maps still show Maple Hill Farms as well as parts east/northwest of I-95 - these areas have since been developed into other businesses orresidential areas like West Side Drive (now Boulevard) between I-95 & Route 202 etc.). One can explore this area without running into any problems if one drives slowly alongInterstate 95 looking for signs pointing towards Maple Hill Farms or South Side Drive (now State Road 202) - both roads lead away from town centre pretty quickly once you leaveI-95 behind). Pleasantville was platted in 1792 and became a borough in 1834. The post office was established in 1835, and the first store opened in 1838. In 1870, Pleasantville incorporated as a city. The population increased to over 10,000 by 1900, and the city annexed two neighboring townships in 1922. The population decreased to 7,500 by 1935 but grew again to 11,000 by 1960. Borough status was terminated in 1964 and the city merged with nearby Paramus.
