The town became a planned community after the United States government decided to establish towns around strategic points on the Delaware River. The first post office in Pleasantville was established in 1824. The first settler in Pleasantville was John Gorman who arrived in 1824. A year later, he married Anna Maria Simons. In 1830, Pleasantville had a population of sixty-six people and two stores. By 1840, the population had grown to one hundred people and four businesses. In 1847, the first school was built in Pleasantville. It was called the Old School House and served as both a school and homes for scholars until it burned down in 1865. In 1850, Drury Hall was built on what is now First Street corner with Market Street. It served as a hospital until it closed its doors in 1922 due to funding cuts by then Senator James Middletownesque Denton Youngblood (R). A new school building was constructed on Third Avenue between Market and First Streets from 1893-1896 under direction of Superintendent of Schools Cornelius Haines Price (D). It served as an elementary/middle/high school from 1896-1925 before becoming known as Pemberton High School subsequenty
