Pleasantville is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton–Ewing metropolitan area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Pleasantville were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664 and named it "Nieuw-Amsterdam". A grant from the English East India Company was made to John Beale on March 7, 1699, as part of the Beale Grant Ranch which bordered Middlesex County on one side and Sussex County on the other. A post office called Pleasantville was established in 1809, and remained in operation until 1840. The name derives from "pleasant" (a general word meaning "peaceful") plantation near Princeton where early settlers resided. In 1871, a group of farmers purchased 53 acres (20 ha) of land east of present-day Pleasantville for $5 per acre ($/ha). They designated their land "Pleasant Valley", which became a township in 1924. The township's assembly hall was built in 1928 and enlarged several times over its history; it currently stands at 523 South Broad Street. In 1954, Pleasant Valley became an independent municipality when it split from Mercer Township due to increasing development within its borders without giving up any land or services to that municipality; however, residents referendum rejected secession by a wide margin. The Post Office closed down on October 26th 1981 due to lack of sales despite pleas from local officials; however mail continued to be delivered via private carriers until 1984 when all mail stopped being sent through postal channels altogether due to budget cuts by then Governor Christie Whitman following her reelection campaign promise not to reduce state government spending if reelected as governor.

As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 7,869 people residing in the town center. Of these, 4% were institutionalized because they are either prisoners or juveniles in adult detention facilities; 1% were military veterans; 13% self-identified as being “other/unknown”; and 79% identified as white alone or black alone.[2] The median age in the town was 36 years.[3] The racial makeup of the town was 97% White and 2% Black or African American according to US Census figures for 2000.[4] Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2% of the population,[5] while Asians constituted 1%.
Pleasantville was founded in 1814 by Captain James Smith. It became a borough in 1903. The borough was merged with Jersey City in 1998.
