Multi-tool history in Pleasantville, New Jersey began with the first tool store in this town on May 10, 1847. The store was organized by E.H. Black and his brother-in-law, John Prentice. They opened their shop on Main Street between East High and West High streets. The Tool Store was one of the first shops in the area to carry a variety of tools for farmers and ranch hands. The Tool Store continued to operate until it closed its doors on October 9, 1865. It is said that the store's closing had something to do with its struggling economy; at that time, Pleasantville only had a population of about 200 people. However, within a few years after theTool Store's closure, other businesses began cropped up in town; among these were anvilsmiths Jno Ellison and Amos Borough (later known as Borough Forge), blacksmiths James Caldwell (later known as Caldwell & Hall) and George Patton (later known as Goodall), mechanics Abraham Lincoln (later known as Lincoln Fairey), Elijah Woods (later known as Elijah Woods & Sons) and Simon Leach ( later known as Leach Bros.). By 1871, when Pleasantville had a population of around 1,000 people, there were already several businesses operating in town; among these were two hotels: The Masonic Temple on North High Street and The Star Hotel on East High Street. In 1875, multi-tool entrepreneur Aiken Coleman opened his own business in town - Coleman's Hardware Company - which became one of the most successful businesses in local history. Coleman operated his hardware store from what is todayknown as Second Avenue between South Broadwalk Road and Front Street in Pleasantville until he sold it to Walter Aiken Jr., son of Aiken Coleman Sr., in 1926. Walter Aiken Jr.'s family ran the business until it closed its doors in 1984; however, within a few months after its closure, another business called "Aiken's"opened up at the same location - this time being run by Vincent Doherty through 1984 until his death five years later. Doherty was responsible for bringing new life to Coleman's Hardware Company; prior to him ownership it had been inactive for more than 20 years! In fact during Doherty's tenure at "Aiken’s", there were several key improvements made to the company such as introducing paper bags into service which allowed customers to packaging their products even further for shipment overseas - an early example of how online shopping would take hold soon afterwards!
