Pleasantville is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pleasantville was founded in 1859 by farmers and families from southern New York Township on the border of Mercer and Sussex Counties. The name "Pleasantville" is thought to be derived from a reference to a stream running through the community which locals called "Pleasant Pool". The first residents of Pleasantville were farmers who had come overland from southern New York Township on the border of Mercer and Sussex Counties. By 1859, many of these settlers had moved to what is now Pleasantville from those areas where development was not possible due to tight land constraints or natural obstacles like hills or rivers. In 1870, two local businessmen named Gifford and Wessel bought 640 acres (248 ha) of forested land near what is now Pleasantville for $1 per acre (3/4 bushel). This area became known as Wessel Park after the two men who donated it. The park has been used for hunting, fishing, camping and other recreational purposes ever since. In 1905, one of Pleasantvillers sons married into one of America's most prominent families – Elizabeth Cady Stanton – which helped contribute significantly to its growth during that decade. One major beneficiary of this marriage was Anna Lovelace Mackenzie who became an early Sterling Heights businesswoman and philanthropist with an interest in improving conditions for women workers throughout America. Her husband also enjoyed some success as a businessperson himself; he cofounded Mackintosh & Company with his father-in-law John Mackintosh in 1892 before becoming president and CEO (1899–1905) when their company merged with Armour & Co., making him one of America's most successful entrepreneurs during that period.
