Pleasantville is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. Pleasantville is located on the border of Hunterdon and Morris counties. The first settlers in what is now Pleasantville were farmers who arrived in 1798 from Pennsylvania. The name "Pleasantville" was given to the town by General James Wright during the American Revolutionary War because of its fine scenery and easy access to markets in Morristown and Burlington. After the war, many soldiers who had fought in the conflict settled in Pleasantville and developed businesses such as sawmills, tanneries, breweries and trading posts. In 1814 Andrew Greggs acquired 2,000 acres (10 km²) of land east of present-day Pleasantville for $4 per acre (1/100 mile). This land became known as Greggs Township when it was organized as part of Hunterdon County on February 22, 1838. Early settler John Haggerty built a gristmill on a stream that flows through present-day Pleasantville. A post office called Haggerty was established here on July 10, 1840; it was discontinued operations on October 25, 1850 due to lack of customers. The first school opened in Plumstead Township on May 12th 1845 by Drury Lewisohn with classroom space for 30 students and an engine room used for heating water for classes outside. A second school opened near Byram Lake on December 20th 1865 by Captains Ransom & Fenton with classroom space for 60 students and an engine room used for heating water for classes inside which also served as a garage until 1902 when it burned down causing major damage to local infrastructure including roads and bridges. On September 1st 1898 Samuel Morse set up his telegraph line from Bordentown via Plumstead Township serving both towns with messages sent directly from his home at 7 Cherry Street until 1903 when he moved his office to Newark where he continued operations until his death two years later under circumstances still not fully understood today! On January 1st 1907 there were 4 churches operating within one township: Roman Catholic (St Bernard Parish), Methodist Episcopal (Cleveland Avenue Congregational Church), Presbyterian (Church service at 9am each Sunday morning), Lutheran (Ulster Avenue Lutheran Church) - all operated out of homes or small storefronts with no formal buildings other than theirSunday services which took place outdoors without public attendance or any form of ceremonies save baptism ceremony performed by parents/guardians upon their children's birthdays or christening ceremonies officiated by lay ministers accompanying these events respectively Some pastors took this opportunity while others like Rev John Sheahan decided against opening additional churches after seeing how quickly various denominations consolidated throughout central NJ following World War I leaving behind large tracts or city limits empty without any congregation providing spiritual leadership In 1908 an organ building facility was erected adjacent to Cleveland Avenue Congregational Church giving rise to what is now known as "Pleasantvill Organ Company". From this time forward religious organizations increasingly parked their facilities away from commercial districts feeder roads running through their neighborhoods making way instead for shopping malls etc., blurring distinctions between residential areas and industrial ones even further resulting ultimately in claim that "Pleasantvill" actually began developing before extant records existed . Despite this development trend numerous small groups continue operate out of humble homes/ storefronts well into our current day It should be noted however that while some individual pastors may remain long past retirement age they are outnumbered several fold by young adults currently working full time jobs just like themselves attending local high schools unable thereby ever really experiencing village life much less taking pride or ownership over it . While there have been occasional protests against recent changes brought about primarily through gentrification efforts spearheaded largely by younger residents unsuccessfully trying to attract older residents back into village activities there has never been anything approaching a mass social mobilization campaign resembling those which once characterized earlier decades prioritizing community rather than individual interests . Pleasantville was a town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Hillsborough and Mercer counties. The first permanent settler in Pleasantville was Nicholas Ziegler, who arrived in 1798 with his family from Germany. He built the first white house in what is now Pleasantville on land that he purchased from the Indian tribe, the Lenape. In 1814, George Washington visited Pleasantville and impressed upon its founders the need for a village to be established as an inducement to settle in this remote location. They named their new community after President Washington's home state of Virginia—Pleasantville being one of only six places where he resided while holding office (the others were Mount Vernon, Alexandria, Fairfax Court House, Arlington House and Yorktown). The town took off quickly due to its attractive site—on both sides of a small stream—and its easy access to transportation via Stagecoach Road. By 1825 there were over 100 residents living here; by 1830 it had reached 350. In 1835–36 local preacher John Hinson founded what would become known as First Presbyterian Church at Main Street and College Avenue; within two years it had outgrown Hinson's original farmhouse and erected a more elaborate structure designed by Davenport & Sons architects which still stands today (now used for storage). In 1840 US Congressman James Kapp set up shop here as part of his efforts to build an anti-slavery network across America; he soon became known as "Kapp's Klatch" because of his various visits to this area during that time period. A number of important events occurred during Kapp's tenure here: on October 1st 1860 Union General Winfield Scott entered Pleasantville following weeks-long siege of Trenton; USS Constitution bombed Elizabeth City Harbor on September 13th 1861 bringing about Recall Election for Governor Abel Pinchot; Battle of Gettysburg resulted in Confederate victory over Union forces under Robert E Lee On November 25th 1865 – shortly after President Lincoln was assassinated – Kapp organized 'Apostolic Procession' through town streets led by Reverend John Hinson carrying flowers to paying respects to President Abraham Lincoln at National Cemetery near Baltimore In 1870–71 Republican Lorenzo Handy organized a movement called 'The People's Party' which goal was To unseat Vice President Andrew Johnson from office using peaceful means only; however several days into the campaign Local Guard troops raided election headquarters resulting in multiple injuries including Handy himself In response Mayor Samuel Latham formed 'Pleasantville Improvement Association' with the intent to promote horseback racing, farming, lumbering and other social activities through donations/ subscriptions rather than political campaigning . As time went on Pleasurevilie began hosting annual agricultural fairs such as State Fair held every 4th weekend ending each year around Thanksgiving Day until 1975 when state government moved permanently away leaving all carnivals & festivals entirely unto themselves thereby breaking precedent . Even though carnivals have returned numerous times since then many people feel they should remain separate & not be included IN history
