In 1847, Pleasantville was founded by George Washington Marsh and his wife Lucy. The town was named for Mount Pleasant, in the state of North Carolina. The Marsh family were early settlers in the area and their farmstead was the first permanent settler’s home in what is now Pleasantville. In 1865, the Borough of Easton merged into Pleasantville Borough; however, because Easton Township included both Townships of Northumberland (east side) and Monmouth (west side), each township continued to have its own police department separate from the others until 1907 when they all amalgamated under one Police Department - known today as Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office - with headquarters located within Pleasantville Borough Hall.
