Pleasantville is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark metropolitan area. The first firearms were made in Pleasantville by John Fenton and his son, Nathaniel. They were pistols with triggers that operated by pulling the trigger back and forth for three times. These pistols were used for hunting game in the area around Pleasantville. In 1892, a Mr. Fenton bought land east of Pleasantville and started to make rifles using shotguns as background weapons. His rifles became known as "Fenton's Firearms." He continued making these firearms until 1906 when he sold them all to J M Stevens & Co., a gunsmiths company in Newark NJ .from then on guns manufactured in Pleasantville were called "Stevens' Firearms." The rifle manufacturing company produced many different types of firearms including revolvers, shotguns, handguns and sporting Arms throughout its years of operation in Pleasantville; however it ceased operations during World War II because of wartime production constraints within the military industries which led to increased demand for steel products (railroad cars etc.) This prohibition against civilian ownership of firearms didn't affect Stevens' Firearms who continued to sell their products through employees at their Newark store until 1945 when they closed their doors forever due to lack of business opportunities following World War II . Pleasantville was founded in 1839 by John G. Smith and his wife, Elizabeth. The town rapidly grew into a major center for agricultural production and trade, with a population of 2,000 in 1840. By 1860, the town hadgrown to 4,000 residents and had become an important commercial center. In 1868, the town obtained its charter from the New Jersey Legislature and began to promote itself as a model city that would provide social opportunities for its citizens. The town experienced great growth during the late 19th century, thanks in part to its role as a key node in the New York-Philadelphia railroad network. Pleasantville became an important cultural center within this growing region, hosting several famous authors and artists during this time. In 1912, Pleasantville was designated as the official capital of Passaic County by Governor Alfred Ewing. During World War I, Pleasantville played an important role in providing food supplies for Allied forces stationed on American soil. The war also saw significant development in the local economy; after the war, Pleasantville became one of New Jersey's leading industrial communities. During this period of growth, many new businesses were born out of necessity: such as The Peoples Drug Store (now known as Walmart), which opened up in 1950s; or Bob's Cafe (now closed), which served primarily German-speaking customers until 1982.
Pleasantville was founded in 1868 by the parents of George Washington Patton. The town was named for General Lafayette, who died in 1791. The first post office was established in 1870, and the first store opened in 1872. In 1907, the township was divided into Pleasantville proper and West Pleasantville.
