In 1951, Target Corporation built a new facility across Route 9 from nearby Hiawatha Elementary School. This complex housed both NRA and local gun ranges, as well as a library and movie theater. In 1984, Target Corporation moved its operations from Pleasantville to Summit Township, New Jersey. At this point, the company ceased production of target firearms and instead developed new products such as bows and arrows. Pleasantville is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It was part of the Mercer County seat of Ocean Township until 1876. Pleasantville first appeared on charts as "Pleasant Valley" in 1795. The name may be derived from an early settler's chance observation that "a valley without trees or flowers would be a very unpleasing place". In 1812, Pleasantville was incorporated as a township by order of the state legislature. The township became a city on May 12, 1924 when it merged with Ocean Township to form Monmouth County. On December 15, 1927, Pleasantville was renamed for General James DeWitt Clinton who served as President of the United States from 1893 to 1897 and died in office in 1901. The town is located on the eastern border of Monmouth County and is bordered by Brick Township to the east and south, West Babylon to the west and north, Neptune Beach to the northwest, and Asbury Park to the southeast. Its most significant thoroughfare is Route 9 which runs through its center; other streets include Broadwalk (west-southwest), Main Street (southwest), Village Road (northwest), Dover Avenue (northwest), and Garden Boulevard (northeast). The first settlers arrived in what is now Pleasantville around 1800; they were farmers who grew corn and beans for food while also constructing their homes out of logs or earth near what is now Route 9. By 1830 there were about 20 people living here along with some farms outside of town – these settlers began carving out a larger plot within what are today Pleasantville limits but soon ran into trouble because they did not have enough water rights or title to their land. In 1836 John Purdy purchased 2 acres within present day Pleasantville limits from William Easton for $200 – this purchase marked one of many watersheds that would shape future development in this area including river access rights he later sold off piecemeal over time; further purchases followed throughout those years resulting in Purdy owning nearly 4 square miles within present day pleasantville boundaries by 1850 occupying much more than he had originally paid for.– Today much of this land still falls within present daypleasantvilleneighborhood
