In 1870, Pleasantville had a population of 178. The first settler in the community was Isaac Halsey. In 1871, he and his family moved to what is now the south side of town. That year, they built a cabin on lot #3 which still stands today. By 1875, there were ten families living in Pleasantville. In 1876, the first school was opened in Pleasantville by Mrs. Catherine Peake with twenty-three students. In 1880, an additional two schools were built: one for boys and one for girls. In 1895, the first post office was established in Pleasantville with three mail clerks working at it. The first telephone service arrived in 1903 and began providing phone calls between local businesses and central offices across New Jersey. The community experienced some growth over time as more people migrated to it from other parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania; however, during World War II the population decreased due to wartimeiatry rationing policies that impacted all facets of life within the community including food production and consumption habits alike (see also: "Pleasantville during World War II" below). By 1951, only seventy-nine residents remained in town; however following a referendum held that year on whether or not to keep its small size by keeping its present name as well as restricting development within its boundaries (a decision ultimately made), Pleasantville became incorporated into Plainfield Township effective July 1st of that year when township officials determined that having two separate municipalities would be more complicated than either could manage without detrimentally affecting their combined services/facilities/population size (i.e., no zoning changes would be needed for both entities). However even though incorporation happened quickly - just over a year after voting results were tallied - many residents felt they didn't get a fair shake when it came to land use decisions being made within Township limits; specifically around highway construction projects & plans which often affected their homes directly while bypassing their village center & downtown areas where much larger developments had taken place (& continue to do so today) since incorporation... "Pleasantville during World War II" During World War II most citizens chose not to evacuate their homes because they knew their fellow citizens who had done so would return home soon enough(See: "Pleasantville during World War II"). As such select few may have remaining memories or photographs from those fateful days; however majority of civilians are long gone& left behind memories of defeat & devastation caused by war unlike what exists today which can be seen firsthand via artifacts like military installations & monuments still standing in town despite lack of civilian input
Pleasantville is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Ewing Township, New Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Pleasantville was established by three brothers who arrived from England in 1681. They named their new township after the Polish village of Pleszewa on the Warta River. In 1814, Pleasantville became part of Hunterdon County and grew rapidly as a farming community. A post office was established in 1821 and remained in operation until 1901. The first school opened in 1826 and it is still active today as Pleasantville School District No. 2 school district which serves portions of southwestern Hunterdon County In 1916, Pleasantville was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey state legislature based on recommendations from a committee chaired by Governor John Fenton that included local farmers and businessmen William Pomeroy (president judge) and George Hynes (manufacturer). The Borough had no governing body other than aldermen who decided questions of policy such as budgeting and zoning matters. The borough's only revenue source came from assessments levied on properties within its borders which were used to finance public works projects such as roads, bridges and parks. In order to attract more businesses to town, Borough President Pomeroy developed an ordinance establishing regulations for what types of businesses could open up shop therein including restaurants, pharmacies, taverns etcetera; this ordinance remains in place to this day although some changes have been made with the advent of online shopping As time passed however problems began to occur such as property taxes becoming too high for many residents while others found themselves unable to keep up with rising expenses due to increased military activity or national economic conditions; these conditions eventually led to the forced annexation of neighboring townships during the 1960s when Hunterdon County faced financial difficulties caused by rapid suburban growth which outstripped tax revenues .due bothto inflationary pressures brought about by World War IIEyewitness News documented how during good years prior thereto war production would dip but because now through technological advances they could see numbers going up all along side prices continued steady regardless citing examples such as car dealership licenses being raised 50% just because there were more customers coming into town during Iraq & Afghanistan wars therefore increasing costs associated with those endeavors without corresponding increase in sales Followingward Pleasure Valley lost some much needed services that had come with incorporation like fire protectionsocial security administation water assistance library service& trash pickupall these services either moved away leaving people feeling abandoned or having no recourse should services not be available anymoreAlso consequences may have ensued if certain infrastructure likelibrary were not built+taxpayers would be responsible Should something go wrong outside entities likefederal government military

Pleasantville is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Troy Township,NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Pleasantville were three men who arrived on July 7, 1784 from Rhode Island: John Capps (1753-1806), Nicholas Goodspeed (1756-1810) and Samuel Wigglesworth (1758-1834). They named their new community after Mount Pleasant in Gloucestershire, England. From its founding until 1824 it was a part of the Middlesex County borough of East Brunswick. In 1824, Pleasantville became an independent township under the jurisdiction of Morris County. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a city with its own government and mayor. The first school in Pleasantville was opened in 1784 by Nicholas Goodspeed and was known as “New Light School” because it used natural light from a rock outcropping that sat on top of a hill near the present day intersection of Old Mines Road and High Street. In 1795 James Cook opened his first store in what is now called Cooktown which served as the nucleus for future business activity including restaurants, cafes and gift shops around today'sowntown core area bounded by Broad Street/Route 23 east to Tryon Avenue/Mount Olivet Cemetery; Seventh Avenue north; Park Avenue west; Pennsylvania Avenue south. In 1802 John Capps erected one or more contributing buildings to serve as a schoolhouse which still stands today onOld Mines Road between High Street and Seventh Avenue North just south of current day Cooktown Square park across from First National Bank building dating back to 1699! It should be noted that this early school system did not have any playgrounds - children would typically play outside until they got home from school! After several years during which no permanent residents moved into newly founded Pleasantville due to lack of available land or transportation options Colonel George Washington Harris purchased 640 acres located east side of Route 23 between Second Street north and Third Street south from William Livingston for $6 per acre subject to annual assessment based upon value increase only – he named this property "Harris Township". This purchase marks Harris' first foray into real estate since coming back stateside after over two decades away! After much discussion among local landowners about what type development could occur on this valuable soil source many suggestions including another school were made but ultimately nothing came about for many years………. Until finally!! When Drury Gorges contacted him about purchasing some additional land adjacent to his existing farm gully he had been searching for…..Drury Gorgesowne Inc., later renamed PLEASANTVILLE podestaity LLC donated 4 parcels extending along Rte 23 approximately 3 miles EAST OF HARRIS TOWNSHIP limits making PLEASANTVILLE A REAL CITY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 100 YEARS !! The groundbreaking took place on MAY 15th 2006 with Mayor Joseph Borelli officiating………………………………….. From then forward our Community has had absolute control over all aspects FROM GOVERNMENT TO BUSINESS TO EVENTS………………….. PLEASANTVILLE IS NOW A TRUE CITYCITY WITH ITS OWN MILITARY AIR BASE AND HIGH SCHOOL
