Pleasantville, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Trenton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pleasantville were Dutch traders in 1624. They named it "New Amsterdam", after their colony in North America. In 1795, the Township of Pleasantville was established when portions of Brightwood and West Milford were merged into Mercer County. The township's name derived from its location on high ground overlooking the community of West Milford and its four wells known as "Pleasant valleys". In 1839, Pleasantville became the site of one of three schools for African Americans founded by Elijah Muhammad in Trenton; the others were East Brunswick School and Hope School. Muslim immigrants who had settled near Princeton formed a group called "Mullahs" to teach blacks how to read and write in Arabic so they could gain access to education denied them under white rule in America. In 1847, John Prentice built a sawmill on Harlan Creek which he continued until his death in 1886; it remains one of only two mills still operating in Mercer County today (the other being Millsboro). When logging operations ended around 1920, most residents left for good or moved away because they lacked Prospect Hill Road access which led upriver into nearby Teaneck; that road opened up during World War II when aerial bombing destroyed many homes along Prospect Hill Road. In 1955, Pleasantville incorporated as an independent municipality with a population size of 2,500 people using township government services as well as running its own police department with 11 officers plus support staff totaling 52 hours per week year round; at that time all municipalities within Mercer County were single-member districts with no vote by citizens for mayor or council members ( except for township councils where citizens exercised some degree thereof through referendum). Burlington Township annexed Pleasantville on February 15th 1959 making it a full member municipality with voting rights similar to those possessed by townships within Mercer County but without power over municipal affairs such as land use or budgeting procedures while Burlington Township retained responsibility for water supply and sewerage while also providing educational opportunities ( via taxpayer funded charter Schools) to village residents attending school located east northeast of town across Carpenters Mill Rd./Route 38/Ontario Ave./Lakeview Dr., just off Route 9W from exit 5 off Interstate 95 whereupon Plainfield Township took legal steps against annexation alleging that this arrangement violated zoning regulations designed to prevent development adjacent to Lakeview Drive/Carpenters Mill Rd./Route 38/Ontario Ave./Lakeview Dr., thereby violating Plainfield Township's right-of-way easement granted pursuant to an arbitration agreement between representatives from both villages obtained prior thereto whereby both townships agreed not To build any dwellings upon lot lines situated within fifty feet width either side thereof line extending thence seawardly towerto Lakeview Drive

In 1831, James Proctor and his brother Daniel founded a farm on what is now Main Street in Pleasantville. They named it "New Hope." From this farm, proctor ran an early grocery store and post office for residents of Pleasantville and West Orange. In 1853, they donated land to build a Methodist church which became known as "Pleasant Valley". The original church was destroyed by fire in 1915 but new construction began soon afterwards and it remains today as one of America's most popular churches. During World War I, many people from around the area served in the military; some were soldiers who left their homes to serve; others were farmers who produced food for troops stationed abroad; still others worked at local factories manufacturing munitions or other products needed during World War I. Some residents also volunteered their time to work with war relief organizations such as American Red Cross or National Peacekeeping Force camps across New Jersey during wartime.
