After English colonists moved into this region in 1714, they called it Westmoreland Heights. In 1776, when Congress passed the Declaration of Independence, Pleasantville contributed two members to the local militia detachment that helped fight for independence from Great Britain. In 1875–76 Pleasantville became one of seven townships within Monmouth County which were consolidated withOceanport and free from civil jurisdiction over municipal affairs except for building permits and streetlights; these township boundaries have been unchanged since then. However, residents are still subject to countywide elections as part ofMonmouth Borough formang allcrimes and civil rights including voting rights (except for vehicle registration). According to the 2010 Census," Pemberton Road" flows through Pleasantville center providing access both into town proper via Main Street/University Avenue or Allenhurst Avenue exits off CR 925E just inside borough borders while also serving as an artery linking Garden State Parkway exit #2 minutes' walk away accessed via Maplewood Avenue Exit #1 immediately outside borough borders."Asbury Park" lies Across US 1 on its northwestern border with Asbury Park NJ while Neptune Township bounds southwesterly extension across Easton Ave., terminating at CR 925E Border between townships; both municipalities share an EMS station located concurrently within their respective borders."

Pleasantville was settled in 1795 by a group of English farmers who had arrived on the continent in the previous decade. The town quickly became a center for agriculture, and its citizens developed a strong sense of community. By 1830, Pleasantville had become an important stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. The town's prosperity declined during the 1840s and 50s, however, as transportation improvements made it more difficult to get goods and people to market. In 1849, Pleasantville's residents voted to secede from New Jersey and form their own state. However, this proposal met with resistance from other parts of New Jersey, and the town eventually rejoined New Jersey in 1861. Pleasantville underwent several changes during the 20th century. In 1921, it was renamed after General James Mhowatt III, who served as governor of New Jersey from 1911 to 1913. A new shopping mall was built in 1954, and another road was added to the loop around town in 1970. In 2000, Pleasantville voters passed a referendum asking for city status; this decision led to many Changes & Additions over time that have made Pleasantville one of NJ's most vibrant communities today!
Pleasantville was founded in 1795 by the Rev. John Woolridge and his wife, Anne. The first school in Pleasantville was built on the present site of the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church in 1812. In 1815, a store and post office were erected on the corner of Main Street and East Second Avenue. The town quickly grew enough to require a two-story courthouse in 1820, which was built on Mechanic Street. A fire destroyed the courthouse in 1831, but it was rebuilt soon after with assistance from local farmers. In 1865, Pleasantville incorporated as a borough. voters approved adding an additional ward (the part of town east of Second Avenue) in 1870, and that year they also annexed the neighboring village of Old Bridge. In 1896, PleasantVILLE became independent again when it absorbed Old Bridge into its borders. By then, however, pleasure towns had all but disappeared around New Jersey due to prohibition laws passed during Grover Cleveland's presidency. On October 1st 1899 – one hundred years after its founding – Pleasantville incorporated as a city under the name "Pleasantville." It enjoyed some rapid growth during World War II thanks to wartime military production enhancement projects conducted by nearby Monmouth County; however, this prosperity came to an end within several decades as industry slowly declined throughout much of New Jersey following WWII. A municipal referendum held in 1956 asked for cityhood again; this time voter approval resulted in incorporation becoming official on December 3rd 1957. The population peaked at over 100,000 during the late 1960s before gradually declining over subsequent decades; by 2000 census(), there were only about 50 residents living inside the city limits
