Pleasantville, New Jersey is a town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-NJ-EAST Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun in Pleasantville was an old cannon that had been abandoned in 1844 and salvaged by local farmers. In 1855, a man named Daniel Harmel built a sawmill and millrace around which the town grew. In 1876, the village of Pleasantville merged with neighboring Rahway to form the new municipality of Rahway Township. In 1898, one of Pleasantville's two schools became known as "The Arsenal School" after it became one of only two high schools in Hunterdon County (the other being West Orange High School). The school closed in 1959 but reopened as "New Norcia Elementary School" in 1978. In 1983, it became "Pleasantville Middle School". In 2006, it became "Pleasantville High School". The current name comes from its location on Route 19 outside of Plainfield Township: "Pleasant Valley High Schools". Beginning in 1915, Smith & Wesson began manufacturing handguns here at their factory on Main Street.
