The name "Pleasantville" comes from the Dutch for "pleasant place". Pleasantville was established as a settlement in 1797 by commissioners from Perth Amboy and Easton. The first post office in Pleasantville was established on October 25, 1797, and served until 1827. The first store in Pleasantville was built on Main Street in 1800 by John Worthen. In 1802 an addition to the stores on Main Street were added by Isaac Davis and James Goode. In 1814 an addition to the stores was made on Store Road which became known as "The Avenue." In 1825 when Morrisania (later West Orange) Township was created, Pleasantville became a part of it and its Anglican Church (the oldest extant church in Hunterdon County) continued to serve as its parish center until 1955 when it moved to Morristown Township where it remains today. 1/2 mile west of present day Route 904 stands original pioneer settler's home still standing!
