Pleasantville is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from a word meaning "pleasant" or "peaceful." The first settlers in what is now Pleasantville were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named their township after the family of Lord Baltimore, which owned much of what is now Mercer County. The first post office was established in 1793 and the first store was opened in 1815. In 1825, John Smith built the first gristmill on the current site of Pleasantville Millsrace. In 1829, he built the first schoolhouse on this site and it served as both a public school and as a private academy until 1860 when it became an Episcopal church. In 1902, George Waddell donated land to build Pleasantville High School (later known as Robert Wood Johnson High School). It replaced an earlier high school that had been destroyed by fire in 1892. By 1910, there were 10 businesses located within one mile of the town center including four banks and ten grocery stores. The Second World War led to a large influx of refugees into Pleasantville during World War II with many more Germans moving than ever before to escape Nazi concentration camps throughout Europe. They brought their food supplies with them and over time they also began building up some landscaping around their homes which still remains today as part of downtown's appearance today; however most all evidence suggests that they left little lasting damage behind other than changing course slightly towards automotive manufacturing ( Honda ). One such example can be found down alley number 5 where early examples of Volkswagens can be seen parked out front for all to see - something that would not have happened had these refugees remained hidden away among German-owned businesses like those mentioned previously!
