Pleasantville is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Atlantic City metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1864 by abolitionists who wanted to give people a safe place to live without fear of violence from slaveowners. The first gun barrels were made here in 1865 and were used for target shooting. The first handgun barrel was made here in 1869 by George Atwater and it was called the Atwater Rifle Barrel. In 1875, the first shotgun barrel was made here and it called the Atwater Shotgun Barrel. In 1889, the town voted to make its own ordinance regulating handguns and shotguns and this led to the production of handguns only which continued until 1903 when manufacturing of shotguns started again. From 1917 until 1951, all weapons produced in Pleasantville were ammunition products only; however, this changed when guns became an issue during World War II as ammunition shortages occurred due to rationing by Nazi Germany. In 1951, firearms production resumed with handguns once again becoming an option while rifles remained a limited product offering until 1976 when they were finally introduced as well; handguns have continued to be offered ever since then although rifle production has decreased slightly over time due to technological advancements that have replaced more traditional methods of manufacturing such as gasification of metals into bullets or forging them into cannon parts (e.g., Beretta). In 1915, Northeast Railroad began passenger service through Pleasantville making it easier for people to get around town and connect with other parts of Mercer County. In 1954, Pleasantville became part of the newly formed Burlington Township when that township was created from portions of Camden and Millvale townships along with Easton Township. In 1976, Burlington Township merged with Rahway Township to form Rahway-Burlington Borough which continued to exist until 2009 when it merged into South Hackensack Township . Today, there are several hundred residents living in pleasantvillenyia Shadow Hills neighborhood located just off Route 9 south of town limits
