In the early 1800s, Pleasantville was a small town in upstate New York. It had a population of about 2,000 people and was located on the border of the Ohio River and New Jersey. In 1811, the area became part of what is now Rutherford County, New Jersey. In 1814, it became part of Monroe Township in Bergen County, New Jersey. In 1827, Pleasantville changed its name to Newtown after President James K. Polk delivered a speech there that summer. The town's first firearm manufacturing establishment was opened in 1828 by Andrew Marvell who also founded the local newspaper called "The Newtown Patriot". By 1830, Newtown had outgrown Pleasantville and moved to Bordentown. At that time, gun manufacturers located along the Delaware River were starting to become dominant over those in inland communities due to technological advancements at this point in history. Pleasantville experienced its heyday as an agricultural community during World War I because of its strategic location on both sides of the river between Newark and Camden (then known as "Newark Liberty"). During World War II, it served as an assembly plant for defense munitions production by General Motors Corporation based in nearby Paterson. The factory closed down in 1984 but portions have been preserved as museum displays since then including a collection of antique firearms

Pleasantville is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Pleasantville was founded in 1795 as a small farming community on the east bank of the Susquehanna River. The village was named for Colonel George Washington's plantation in Virginia. It was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1846, from parts of Rahway and West Orange Township. On May 7, 1952, Pleasantville merged with Rahway to form the new city of Rahway-Pleasantville. The first inhabitants of what is now Pleasantville were Native Americans who lived along the Susquehanna River before European colonists arrived in search of fur and other resources. In 1795, when George Washington moved his family from Mount Vernon to establish himself as a proprietor in Friendship township on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, he chose this location because it had some good soil and water supplies for planting crops and raising livestock. By 1800 many European immigrants had settled in what is now Pleasantville; however, only about fifty people lived there permanently during that time frame. In 1806 Captain John Smith discovered oil Rigdigging near what is now Pleasantvile while exploring for coal seam gas deposits off the Atlantic coast of Pennsylvania; this discovery led to an increase in traffic through which local farmers could sell their goods upstream rather than rely on imported items such as flour or cheese from Europe. Thanks to this increased trade activity, grain prices plummeted around this time and much land became available for cultivation; by 1810 most residents were self-employed farmers or merchants who traded with nearby towns along theSusquehanna River (mainly Rahway). During these early years there was no public school system within easy reach for villagers living near riverbanks because transportation wasn't enough to take students away from their homes each day for school purposes; instead parents enrolled their children into private schools run by nuns or priests across town (rarely operated by state government). This situation changed beginning around 1840 when construction began on two miles (3 kilometers)long Episcopal parish road from Rahway through present-day Pleasantville and West Orange Township towards Elizabethtown Centre; soon after this 215 people were employed constructing both main road bridges over tidal waters Ravine Creek atascogogue Road Bridge No 2 & 3 & 4 & 5 Bridge No 6 - making travel between villages much easier (& less expensive!). This development also helped stimulate increasing exports/trade among villagers – previously they’d only been able to produce/sell raw materials developed locally hereabouts like fruits etc.; today we export various types products including food products (fruit juices etc.), medical equipment (heart valves etc.), building materials etc., all grown here not just processed overseas like so often done nowadays! Many natives still live active roles within society today (elders / pastors / teachers), more traditional rural lifestyles remain unchanged since then….. but some things have changed…..!!

Pleasantville was founded in 1766 by John and Mary Pleasant. The town derived its name from the presence of many pleasant trees, which were a characteristic of the area at the time. In 1859, Pleasantville became part of Uniontown Township. On July 1, 1909, it merged with neighboring Uniontown Township to form the new township of Pleasantville-Uniontown.
