The name "Pleasantville" is derived from Pleasant Valley which stretched from what is now Pleasantville to the village of Easton. The first settler in what is now Pleasantville was Abram Reeves and his family who arrived in 1797. In 1814, John Dorney settled on the east side of the river near where current Route 9 meets Interstate 80. The community's ZIP code 07956 was created on April 12, 1978 and became part of Garden State Parkway when it was built across parts of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties into New Jersey. In 2006, Pleasantville had a population of 1,702 people living in 602 households out of an area total of 2,202 square feet (190 m2). According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau report "Asbury Park-South Seaside Township", which includes much of present day Pleasantville as well as sections south and west of Route 9 along Hudson Bay including Amboy Township and parts of Easton Township; its population has dropped by almost 50% since 2000 to 711 people living in 524 households (-691 residents) with a median household income $49,617 (+$7 million compared to 2000), according to NJ Advance Media's analysis using2010 US Census data released that year." This decrease can be partially attributed to forces outside their control such as Hurricane Sandy which destroyed many homes throughout Asbury Park-South Seaside Township but not Pleasantville; also tight housing prices for workers commuting into Paramus or Secaucus due to large workforces commuting there each day; lack thereof investment in new infrastructure or manufacturing industries within communities surrounding Asbury Park-South Seaside Township during this time period."

Pleasantville, New Jersey is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Pleasantville was incorporated as a borough on October 14, 1878, from portions of Hackensack and Southwick townships. The name originated from thepleasant light that could be seen from certain parts of the town during the day becauseofthe abundance of trees in those areas. At night people would come to see this same light and call it "Pleasantville." The original inhabitants were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1664 and named their community after Lord Walpole's estate near Huntingdon Valley in England. In 1785, John Woolridge erected a gristmill on what is now Water Street in Pleasantville; this mill became known as Woolridge Mill until 1853 when it was bought by George Washington Carden who renamed it Lafayette Mill. In 1875, an opening took place for the first public school in Morris County when Northumberland Township built Easton School on West Side Road within sight of Pleasantville Mills; Easton School operated until 1915 when it closed due to financial difficulties. On December 12th 1876, Pleasantville Borough (formed August 15th) merged with Middlesex Township (organized December 10th) to form Morris County under Governor James Kapp’s order following the American Revolution which ended with independence from Great Britain. In 1912-1913 there were two amendments to the borough Constitution providing for two seats per township while also increasing district size from three to six wards; these amendment did not take effect until 1914 upon ratification by referendum by all residents of both borosities as required by law according to section 5-A of said constituion On January 1st 1918 Pleasantville Borough became one unit with its neighboring districts Southwick and Hackensacktownships forming Englewood Township pursuant to Executive Order No: 6 dated February 2nd 1916 issued by then-Governor Alfred Vail On July 29th 1922 Englewood Township annexed parts of Donaldsonstown Township so that Englewood had five municipalities including four townships plus an unincorporated village called Belle Mead which continued operations separate from Englewood through 1951 despite efforts made by some members ofEnglewood Township to merge intoEnglewood Township

The population increased rapidly after incorporation, and by 1880 it had reached over 1,000 people. In 1910 Pleasantville had a school system that included a high school and two junior colleges. In the 1920s and 1930s Pleasantville experienced a rapid growth in industry, with several large factories coming to town. After World War II the economy slowed down, but saw some resurgence in the 1990s when new businesses came to town.
