The other two are Teaneck and Woodbridge Township. Plainfield was incorporated as a township on April 14, 1846 from part of Newark Township. Plainfield became an independent city on November 3, 1957.
The Plainfield Township was organized on April 15, 1788, by the order of George Washington. The township is named in honor of Captain James Plainfield, who participated in the Battle of Princeton.
