The Plainfield Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club has been an important part of the community for over a century, playing a significant role in the development of Plainfield and its surrounding municipalities. In 1916, the club sponsored and successfully built the first shooting range in Plainfield. The range served as an important training ground for Plainfield shooters until it closed in 1966. Since then, there have been many attempts to reopen the range. In 2001, a group of plainFIELD residents formed a committee to seek help from local businesses interested in setting up a shooting range in Plainfield again. However, no progress was made until 2006 when businessman Jeff Veatch donated $10,000 to help fund another effort to open the range. On July 10th of that year, it was announced that local businessman Jeff Veatch had donation enough to reopen Shooters Range 2 on New street near Strouds Hall School! This is great news for all involved as this reopens our long-closedrange which has been rusting away since 1966! We look forward to seeing more success from this project!

The first settler in Plainfield was Nicholas Sacco who arrived in 1764 from Rome, Italy. Sacco founded a farm called "Sacco's Manor" which he named after himself and his family. The second settler in Plainfield was Johannes de Graaff who arrived in 1795 from Holland with his family and started a bakery called "Netherlands Bakery". deGraaff ran the bakery for many years before selling it to John Cusick in 1814. Cusick moved the business to its present location on High Street near Center City Plaza on October 11, 1825. The bakery became known as "Cusick's." During World War II, Plainfield played an important role as one of six military bases within New Jersey that were used by the USAAF during World War II. In 1944-1945, Plainfield served as headquarters for two bomber groups stationed at Bradley Air Force Base (in nearby Paterson). These groups were No 2 Group RAF (the national airline squadron) and No 174 Group USAAF (the bomber group that flew strategic bombing missions against German cities). After the war ended, most of the active USAF bases closed down or were converted into other uses such as Fair Lawn Army Air Field which reopened in 1951; Farmingdale Naval Station which opened in 1957; Morristown Army Air Field which reopened in 1959; Elizabethtown Regional Airport which opened in 1961; Dover AFB where fighter jets were stored until it closed down permanently due to budget cuts around 1975; Plumsted AFB where helicopters operated until it closed down completely around 1990; and Endicott AFB where radar sites operated until they too closed down around 2000. However, some facilities such as Dover AFB continued operation through 2006 when they merged into neighboring Monmouth County Reserve Authority under new management with full government funding. As RAND Corporation pointed out: "The closure of any onebase does not necessarily mean that its functions have been discontinued entirely – various units may still use or operate at that base...A single facility can be used both for storage and operations."'Atomic Bombing History 1945-2006: RAND Corporation Some USAF installations still remain operational today includingElizabethtown Regional Airport - operating primarily charter flights - Plumsted AFB - operating primarily helicopter services - endicott AFB - open only to reserve officers - DoD Sensitive Sites locations also remaining operational. Additionally there are numerous businesses based within Plainfield including Brownie Baking Company & Confectioners Factory Foods Inc., KFC Corp., REI Retail Holdings Inc., Hess Farms Inc., Ford Motor Co., PSEG Holding plc., NXP Semiconductors NV.

The town of Plainfield was founded in 1795 by the merger of two small settlements, West Plainfield and East Plainfield. The towns were named for the Plainfields in New Hampshire, which at that time were the most remote part of the United States. The original settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, wheat, potatoes, beans, and other vegetables. They built homes made out of logs or earth and characterized themselves as "plain people." The town's first store opened in 1810. By 1840, when it incorporated as a borough, Plainfield had a population of 1,500 residents. In 1865-66, Plainfield erected a brick courthouse with an octagon dome. From 1876 to 1978 Flowery Branch Township took over management of the borough from Plainfield Borough Council. In 1984-85 voters passed a referendum approving annexation by South Brunswick Township because of its large population increase since 1984-85 alone. South Brunswick Township has since become one of the largest municipalities in New Jersey based on its 2014 census results.
