Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Dutch colonists in 1675 and adopted its present name in 1747 following the Battle of Plainfield (April 10-12, 1747). The first post office was established in 1814. In 1881, Plainfield became the seat of Hunterdon County and retains that position today. The history of Plainfield can be traced back to 1675 when some Dutch settlers arrived in what is now Hunterdon County from village on the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia. They were quickly followed by others and within a few years there were more than 100 people living in what would eventually become Plainfields Township. In 1747, however, an outbreak of smallpox caused such great fear in the community that all but three residents fled to Holland for protection – leaving behind their crops and livestock which had to be sold before they could return home. The remaining residents soon rebuilt their homes and businesses while also developing a strong militia system to protect themselves from any possible attack by Native Americans or French Canadians who had settled nearby. One prominent local figure during this time was Nicholas Myrick who served as justice of the peace and treasurer for much of the early 1800s. He also helped found nearby Rahway with his brother John Myrick after moving from West Chester Township where he had beenMayor pro tempore during the revolution (1777-79). Shortly thereafter plainfield borough was formed out of portions of five other townships: Northampton Township (founded July 13th, 1781), Hackensack Township (founded December 12th, 1782), Bergen Township (established February 8th, 1784), Camden Borough (established March 1st “King George”’s Anniversary’ October 11th), Andover Borough (established November 3rd). This action made plainfield one town with a total population exceeding 2,000 residents; it remains onetown today with a population under 1k only due to incorporation into Middlesex County several decades ago! Only two other Hunterdon Counties have so much as 1K residents - Morris Plains & South Amboy - both located outside Of Plainfields limits! As mentioned earlier these days most everyone lives close enought o visit each day ie right off I-95/11southwest NJ exit !!!!!

Plainfield was founded in 1755 as a small, rural town on the Jersey Shore. The area that is now Plainfield was part of Middlesex County until 1825 when it became Union County. In 1837, Plainfield became the first township in Union County to be granted a charter by the New Jersey Legislature. The township's first mayor was William Haddon and its first clerk was John Witherspoon. As Plainfield grew, so did its infrastructure: the township had a post office from 1755 to 1837, an infirmary from 1789 to 1865, a jail from 1785 to 1861, and three public schools from 1792 to 1893. One of these schools, which still exists and is used for school purposes today, taught children Native American history and customs. In 1870, when New Jersey became a state, Plainfield joined neighboring Elizabeth City in becoming one of the original 23 townships within the new state. In 1916 controversy erupted over plans by then-Governor Woodrow Wilson to annex section of Elizabeth City into Plainfield so that his home could be built closer to campaign headquarters. Despite strong opposition from residents who felt their community would suffer if this occurred (and violence resulted), Wilson approved annexation and Clearwater Boulevard designation for what is now Elizabeth City Township despite heavy resistance from local officials. The early years of World War I were difficult for Plainfield; however, with support from President Woodrow Wilson (who had sent troops intoplainfields behalf), the town quickly rebuilt after damage done during fighting along the border between America and Europe. After World War II plainfields economy exploded due in large part to postwar GI flood money brought in by developers interested in building homes near major waterways such as Newark Bay or Broadwalk Avenue). However throughout most of this time there has been little progress made towards restoring historical aspects of our city including signage/markers specific to early 20th century life hereabouts like banshees flourishes around various landmarks or even an entire street named "PlainFIELD" being restored - something we've seen more than once but never quite enough...
The Plainfield Township was first settled in 1764 by the Dutch. The name of the township comes from a word meaning "plain." The first post office was established in 1768, and the township took its name from the community. In 1814, Plainfield became part of Burlington County and remained so until 1950.
