Plainfield is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,567 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Plainfield Township line, east of Newark and north of Elizabethtown. The township was formed from part of Middlesex County in 1824. The first European settlement in what would become Plainfield was by French traders in 1664. In 1719, English settlers arrived and founded what would be known as "New Netherland" to the west of Philadelphia. The land that now includes Plainfield was part of this new colony and it became an Indian reservation after the British abandoned it in 1763. In 1824, portions of Middlesex County were divided into four townships: Plainfield Township, East Brunswick Township (including Rahway), Middleton Township (including Newtonia), and West Allis Township (excluding White Plains). At the same time, Asbury Park Municipality was established from a small portion of Burlington County east of Newark to include all of Bergen County including Hackensack and Passaic Counties as well as parts of Middlesex and Monmouth Counties. In 1840, another portion – this time including all but eastern Livingston County – joining Asbury Park Municipality was added. In 1847, both municipalities were renamed plainfield boroughs with Borough Council being elected by residents instead of ward-style elections which had been used since its establishment. By 1860, the population had increased to 24,052 people living in 8 villages: Arlington Heights (later Arlingtonville), Belleplain Village (later Belleville), Borgess Heights (later Borges Heights), Camp Hill Village (later Camp Hill), Crossroads Village (later Crossroads), Elmira Village (later Elmira), Hewlettown Village( later Hewlettown) and Kirkwood Villages(Later Kirkwood Area). The village boundaries changed frequently due to growth; however most boundaries remain today within their respective communities or unincorporated areas within plainfield boroughs today such as Arlington Heights/Belleville/Borgess Heights/Camp Hill/Crossroads/KirkwoodVillages

Plainfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,869 at the 2010 census. The English name "Plainfield" derived from the ancient village of Shinplowe in Northampton County, England. From 1692 to 1764, Plainfield was part of the Province of New Jersey and was incorporated as a town on April 14, 1764. On November 5, 1834, Plainfield became one of two towns in Hunterdon County that were consolidated with Rahway into Rahway Township. On October 15th of each year since 1889 (except for 1894), the town celebrates its patron saint by having a parade through the streets attended by all classes of citizens including children and their parents/guardians. The first settler in what would become Plainfield was John Smith who arrived on July 12th, 1692 with his family from Piscataway Township,NJ . He and his wife applied for land grants from King George II which were accepted on October 7th 1693 . They started plowing up ground that would become what is now known as Shinplowe Road
In 1764, Plainfield was incorporated as a township. In 1814, it became a village. The first post office in Plainfield was established in 1815. The name of the town changed to Plainfield Township on December 12, 1868. On May 20, 1881, the township became a village and on October 14 of that year it was elevated to city status.
