Plainfield is a city in New Jersey, United States. It is the seat of Morris County and was formed on November 3, 1788, from portions of Newark and Elizabeth townships. The population was 61,836 at the 2010 census. The name Plainfield comes from an Indian word meaning "plain field." The area that became Plainfield was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans who lived here before Europeans arrived in what is now New Jersey in the seventeenth century. In 1675, English colonists named land grants to Sir George Carteret and his brother-in-law William Penn for their service in suppressing Native American resistance to European colonization. The Grants included 240 acres (112 hectares) of land east of what is now Princeton University. The grantees built a log cabin on Good Counsel Creek and called it Fort Christina after Queen Christina of Sweden who had helped Edward Coke resist French attack near Trenton in 1686. This site became known as Greene's Corner where early settlers gathered for trade goods with fur traders travelling through the area on their way north to Boston or Philadelphia. Farming began around Good Counsel Creek during the eighteenth century, but it wasn't until 1814 that development started along Route 9 which ran through present-day Plainfield between Newark and Elizabethtownships. That year, John Stevens founded Stevens Mills which grew into one of America's leading flour mills supplying flour to New York City as well as other parts of North America. At first all production was done by hand but soon machines were brought into operation making this one of America's largest textile manufacturing centers during the nineteenth century. In 1825, farming operations were combined with lumbering under the leadership of Colonel Augustus Kelley who built Orchard Hills Farmstead near where he still lives today across from Ives Center for Art Education complex). From these beginnings much has come to Plainfield including some fine schools such as Morristown High School (founded in 1915), Rutgers University–New Brunswick (opened in 1896), and Doane College—the only college withinMorris County government—and home also to NJITsince its founding in 1964). As industries changed over time so too did social mores; plainfieldshire loyalists sided with certain governments during World War II while others rallied behind Roosevelt’s New Deal; many businesses closed due to relocations throughout post war economic recession while others thrived thanks largely to new technology like online shopping; however there have been recent efforts made by community groups/leaders/citizensryto revitalize downtown areas such as Market Square and old warehouses nearby

Plainfield is a town in and the county seat of Plainfield Township, in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 32,541 as of the 2010 census. The original settlement at Plainfield was founded by English colonists in 1685. It became part of Hunterdon County on May 14, 1814. On February 15, 1784, it received city charter from the state of New Jersey. The township was formed from portions of Bergen Township on November 3, 1855. In 1966 the village of Plainfield merged with the neighboring boroughs of Northvale and Vineland to form what is now called "New York City-Plainfield". The first settlers to arrive in what is now Plainfield were two families who landed on Long Island in 1685: John Woolridge and his wife Sarah Alden had come over on HMS " Apollo ". They built a small cabin near present-day Edison Avenue and Ridge Road. Early residents were primarily farmers who raised chickens and pigs; but soon others began to arrive including some traders and businessmen from England. In 1784, William Tilden built a home at Ridge Road which served as the nucleus for what would become known as "Tilden Square" today. On December 4th, 1814, three days after Battle of Monmouth Court House ended British control over America during the War for Independence (1812-1815), Governor George Washington issued a proclamation declaring that all Native American tribes within America must convert or be destroyed immediately or face force if necessary by law enforcement officers acting under his orders – this event markedthe birthdays of both George Washington (1732-1799) and James Ketchum (1768-1834). With this announcement came requests for settler groups to move into specific areas so that new towns could be founded across sections that had been claimed by English authorities since before independence settlements had been established anywhere east of Delaware Bay - these moves led to what would eventually become known as "New Jersey's Ulster Province". In 1825–26 Stephen Lehigh developed land near present day Edison Avenue/Ridge Road which he named “Lehigh Valley” after himself and fellow Pennsylvania Dutchman Andrew Leight . This area eventually became known as “PlainFIELD” due to its lack of forests or other natural resources making it an ideal location for farming purposes only; however due to its strategic location within central Hunterdon County it continued to serve as an agricultural center until well into the 20th century when development began encroaching onto undeveloped areas resulting in increased traffic congestion on Route 35W thru town limits while commercial activities flourished without any impact on residential use or quality of life thereby contributing significantly towards creating one OfAmerica's most highly congested metros despite being just outsideEntrepreneurial entrepreneurism being responsible for much more than just Increase business activity & job creation
On July 3, 1776, the first British troops landed on the Jersey shore. The Battle of White Plains took place on October 14 and was a decisive victory for the Americans. The British were driven back and never again attempted to invade America. This event is also known as the Battle of Princeton.
