Plainfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark – Trenton–Ewing Metropolitan Statistical Area. Plainfield was founded by English settlers in 1764 and incorporated as a town on March 4, 1821. The original plat of what is now Plainfield Township was filed on October 10, 1764 with the Township Committee. On July 1, 1851, Plainfield Township absorbed parts of Newton Township to form a new township. The township boundaries changed again on January 1, 1957 when portions of Highland Park and South Amboy were annexed into Plainfield Borough. The townships of Bedminster and Northumberland are also located in Hunterdon County; however they have no connection to PlainFIELD other than being listed on the same map as part of that county.

Plainfield is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of Union County. The unincorporated communities of Plainfield Township and Meadowlands are also in Union County. The first people to live in what is now Plainfield were two families from Hackensack who settled there in 1814. They called their settlement "New Hackensack." In 1821, they sold the land to John Trumbull and his brother Joseph for $5,000. John Trumbull renamed the settlement plainfield after himself and his home village of Plainfieldshire near Manchester, England. Union County was formed on March 1, 1784, when surveys were made of what is now Union County by General Jameson as part of the Compromise of 1785 which ended the American Revolution by giving Great Britain control over portions of New Jersey west of Hudson Bay. In 1831, Elisha Goodhue purchased 2/3 interest in The Allen family's farmstead which lay east side (north)of present day Route 22 between East Brunswick and Woodbridge Township for $2 per acre; Goodhue named his property "Goodhue's Corner". Goodhue had come from Gloucester Township, NJ where he had been a farmer since 1790-91 when he married Deborah Allen . On December 21st 1830 Goodhue donated all or part of lot #4 on farmstead known as South Mountain to Trinity Episcopal Church that same year for use as a burying ground for members of his family including himself and wife Deborah who died there on October 10th 1830 aged 50 years old.. From this gift much later came erection or dedication by Trinity Episcopal Churchyard stone & mason work... This corner lot became one block long with an extra story built upon it soon afterwards name changed to Whatley's corner after Revd Samuel Whatley Rector Parish Priest who situated Parish Hall therein until its demolition in 1969 age 100 years old... Reverend Samuel Whatley donated large amount (>$10) towardsChurch building fund back then too so future generations may enjoy today's facilities quite gratuitously! mainline dutch church moved out some time ago but parish hall still standspictured below
