Polk issued an executive order directing all U.S.-owned land east of the Mississippi River to be reserved for Native American reservations. This order was known as the Missouri Compromise and gave Plains Indians access to land that they had long coveted. The resulting influx of Indian refugees increased agricultural production in Plainfield and other towns along the riverfront because new land could be leased or bought at low costs from these tribes without fear ofencroachment from white settlers or government officials. In 1824, Plainfield became part of Princeton Township when it was created from parts of Mercer and Middlesex Townships; it remained part of Princeton until 1938 when it became part of Morris County under statehood laws passed by then-Governor Woodrow Wilson as part of his New Deal program designed to improve living conditions for citizens across America's rural areas. The population of Plainfield peaked at 23,878 in 1930 but has steadily declined since then. Today, the borough is located within Monmouth County and its population is just over 9,000. The earliest known inhabitants of Plainfield were Native Americans who lived on the site now known as Plainfield Township beginning around 1000 A.D. The area was used for hunting and gathering by these peoples until the French arrived in 1664 and began to settle hereabouts. For many years following European contact, the Indians managed to maintain some degree of control over this part of New Jersey due to their strong alliances with certain tribes or groups thereof. However, ultimately British forces prevailed and through land Acquisition took possession of most of what is now Monmouth County in 1702 A.D.. As early as 1765, settlers had begun arriving in what is now Plainfield Township from various parts of New Jersey looking for new land to settle after being disappointed with their previous options within Middlesex County (then called Somerset). John Lederer - one of these early settlers - traveled downstate to purchase property near Whatleytown on June 15th that same year from Nicholas Popeux (a Frenchman) for $2 per acre ($10 per square mile). By January 2nd following his purchase he had already laid out a small strip along Route 22 leading into low ground adjoining Menard’s Mill which still stands today; he named it “Plainfield” after himself and his wife Sarah (née Gass), both natives of England born circa 1715 A.D.. In addition to Lederer’s purchase there were others who contributed parcels or lots towards achieving Corner Brook Township boundaries which formed present day Plainfields Borough: Michael Maher purchased six acres north of Route 22 on July 12th from Nicholas Popeux; Isaac Weissold offered four acres south side Route 22 between Paterson Avenue & West Side Road on October 8th; also on October 8th Samuel Moreland donated two tracts lying east side Main Street between Broadwalk Boulevard & Northumberland Avenue including approximately three hundred feet wide frontage strips running parallel thereto totaling about thirty five feet long James Burtz donated three lots lying west side Trenton Avenue between State Street & Spring Garden Boulevard making him one owner-builder with total investment totalling nearly two thousand dollars… These transactions are indicative not onlyof how large portions of present day Plains Ferry Road lay unclaimed at various points during those days but also illustrate just how fast development could happen when interested parties came together to buy property!
