Plainfield is a town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest municipality in New Jersey and the second-most populous in Union County after Paterson. The first settler in what would become Plainfield was Jonas Woodbury on March 10, 1788. The first town meeting was held on April 2 of the same year and it voted to name the new town plainfield after General Jonathan Leach, who had been its neighbor on Staten Island. On November 3rd of that year, Plainfield became a borough and then township on October 14th of 1834. On December 12th of 1844, Plainfield became an incorporated village when it ratified a charter from the Township Committee with 1 vote against 1. The Village Board appointed John Fenton as its first mayor and made him responsible for all aspects of municipal government including water supplies and fire protection within the village limits (the boundaries now include parts of Hackensack). In 1865, when Newtown merged into Union County, Plainfield became one of its six townships. When Union County was created on November 3rd of 1834 – by merger of Monmouthshire and Hunterdon counties – PlainFIELD fell within its borders; but due to lack thereof until 1861 when it received land from Rahway Township along with West Orange Township – making it one of only two townships not included in that creation – Borough status did not come until 1888 when voters re-elected John Fenton as their Village Mayor & Trustee to maintain public services such as streetlighting while also serving as Chairman for Town Hall meetings which were still conducted outdoors at various locations throughout town center while Rahway Lodge continued to meet inside Borough Hall where previously they had done so since before) In 1911 residents decided to change their name back to PlainFIELD even though Borough status hadn’t yet been given because they felt “plain field should be our banner” instead “to show we are still partakers/portioners/citizens” According to2010 Census data:14,521 people live in Plainfield with 4% black or African American background (compared to Trenton which has over 60% black or African American background) , 5% Hispanic or Latino origin (compared to Newark which has over 85% foreign born residents) . With nearly half his population under 25 years old he is home ground for many high school students across NJ who attend Garden State Community College-East Campus located just blocks away from his doorstep giving young adults easy access both indoors & outdoors without having too much hassle trying get into some other top college or university
