In 1821, William Tilden purchased land north of present-day Livingston Street and built a gristmill which he named after himself (Tilden Mill). The mill continued to be operated by Tilden until it closed around 1840. It has been said that the gristmill may have been the first turbine-powered mill in America. It wasn't until 1851 that Nathaniel Clark erected an engine house on what is now First Avenue – this would become one of the earliest brick buildings in Plainfield Township. Clark also built a storehouse on what is now Second Avenue and added several other buildings to his structure over time including two large barns (now apartments), foursmith shop, blacksmith shop (now demolished), three meetinghouses (all converted into apartments) and five schools: One original schoolhouse still standing on First avenue remains today as part of Maplewood Learning Village; another original schoolhouse burned down in 1922 but was rebuilt; while still another original schoolhouse was torched by arsonists during World War II; all but one have since been replaced with modern structures however Two Original Schoolhouses remain standing across First Ave from Maplewood Learning Village currently home to community Recreation & Parks department & library There are also several churches located throughout Plainfield Township - Evangelical Lutheran (1902), Methodist Episcopal (1899), Presbyterian Dutch Reformed Church Wolverines/Greene's Chapel/Stroud's Chapel 1915-1920 as well as Congregational Churches including Anglo-Catholic Notre Dame de la Santissime Victoire Parish 1886-1989 Holy Cross Catholic Church 1924 Zion Lutheran church renovation completed 2009
