Plainfield, NJ is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. The township is named after Captain Daniel Plainfield who fought in the American Revolution. The history of Plainfield goes back to 1780 when two brothers, Nicholas and Simon DePuy, founded a farmstead on the banks of the Hackensack River. They were soon joined by their brother-in-law John Kellar and others who also developed land in what is now Plainfield. In 1814, James Fenton bought property from Nicholas DePuy and built a mill on the river which became known as Fenton's Mill. In 1839, George Washington Smith sold his interest in Fenton's Mill to Joseph Whitehurst and it became known as Whitehurst's Mill. In 1855, Jethro Gibbs bought land from Joseph Whitehurst and platted what would become Plainfield Township according to plans prepared by Benjamin Harrison Wright with assistance from General Philip Sheridan. The first settler was Moses Griggs who arrived in 1857. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was born in plainFIELD while living at Little Falls Manor near West Milford Township; he would later serve as an Ulysses S Grant Presidential candidate from Illinois and visit Plainfield during his campaign visits there in 1865-1868 (the only time). The townships of East Brunswick and Gloucester were formed out of parts of Hunterdon County following the creation of New Jersey on July 1st, 1911. At that time, Pleasantville was part of East Brunswick Township but it merged with Gloucester Township on January 1st 1912 due to political agitation by local officials against having any separate municipalities within Hunterdon County alone (with the result that Pleasantville lost its status as a borough). To maintain its appearance as a single municipality despite this merger all official documents issued until 1932 declared that "PlainFIELD" stood for "Hunterdon Co., NJ". However unofficial maps published prior to 1932 continued to show individual boroughs listed under their original seatmarks - for example: "East Brunswick", "Gloucester", etc... This continued up until 1972 when Hunterdon County created its current administrative form with responsibility for all municipalities within it - including those within former Essex County - under one common management structure called "The Department of Community Affairs". With this change came increased pressure on local officials to produce more accurateographed maps which finally led to the rebranding of Plainfield Borough as "PlainFIELD" effective January 1st 1973 following years of neglect by then-Mayor Thomas Meehan (a Democrat) & Councilman Harry Heineken (a Republican) preceding their election victory over incumbent Mayor Carmody Macleod (an Independent). From humble beginnings working at various farms throughout childhood into adulthood Daniel Plainfield played an important role in developing our town today through his actions during both revolutionary times and today’s economy. After serving multiple terms as captain in Congress he returned home settling down with his wife Sarah before becoming an active farmer again upon retirement helping start many businesses here such as Pleanfields Nursery Company &Daniel Plains Paper Mills We have always been proudthat we are still home where our fathers started us

Plainfield is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,451 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest community in Middlesex County and the second-largest town on NJ's Central Coast after Newark. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Plainfield Township in 1784. The township was created from parts of Union and Warren townships on November 3, 1868, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The name " Plainfield" originated from a grant by King George III to one of his loyalists, Amos Davenport (1746–1812), for land west of Trenton on the plain between Monmouth and Ocean Counties. In 1874, Plainfield became part of the newly formed Bergen County when it was organized from portions of Passaic and Hudson counties. In 1974, as part of a statewide realignment of county lines that followed the state Supreme Court's decision in "Dormer v. Bell", Plainfield Township became its own separate municipality located within Middlesex County proper rather than being placed within Bergen or Essex counties as it had been before. As part of settlement efforts during World War II, many farmers moved into Plainfield from other parts of North America to grow crops such as wheat and corn; numerous small businesses were founded there also including several ice cream parlors which continue today as well as two banks (the present day First National Bank and Community SavingsBank). Afterward, several large housing projects were built throughout PlainFIELD – most notably Fairview Gardens development off Route 1 south near where Interstate 95 intersects with I-95 northbound lanes – but these have all since been condemned or demolished due to low consumer demand or environmental concerns associated with their construction Arraying highrise condominiums along Utopia Parkway has again caused some concern among locals about possible traffic congestion if development continues unimpeded
