Plainfield is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,571 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest municipality in Hudson County and the ninth-largest community in New Jersey after Elizabethtown, Newark, Paterson, and Howard Beach. As of the 2010 Census, it had a total area of , of which was land and , or 3.9%, was water. The first settlers in what is now Plainfield Township were German immigrants who arrived on the Mayflower in 1638. The Dutch founded Fort Nassau (now part of Hackensack) on the east side of Lake George early in this century as part of their efforts to expand their territory southward following the French and Indian War victory over England at Saratoga (1756). In 1834, when Plainfield Township was formed from portions of Bergen Township andRahway Township along with neighboring townships of Hamilton Heights and Northvale, it became one of only two municipalities in New Jersey without a fire department – the other being Elizabethtown (then called Elizabeth City). In 1874–75 an act entitled "An Act to Encourage Property Owners to Enlarge Their Lots" passed by lawmakers saw plainfield's original white frame houses replaced by red brick duplexes with gingerbread trimming that remain today as one of its defining features. At about this time too some churches began to be built; St John's Episcopal Church (1874), First Presbyterian Church (1875), Christ Church (1876), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1902) are all still standing today. In 1915 Plainfield became home to both Central High School then known as PlainFIELD High School before becoming Emerson College while still located on Second Avenue between Park Avenue South and Livingston Street which later became University Boulevard before finally being moved back onto 2nd Avenue between University Boulevard and Livingston Street just prior to withdrawal from NJCAA competition for students beginning in 2020. The move also resulted in demolition/replacement/renovation/updating programs for all buildings on campus including: gymnasiums; hockey arena; dining commons; student services center; library wing; administration building; athletic fields including football stadium now known as Randall Arena & Events Center ; new science laboratories complex including an attached aquatic center specifically designed for research &study into aquatic life forms & their environment etc.; three residential blocks totaling 6 acres directly north (.5 miles west)of central campus - these homes have been renamed after local heros or families who have made significant contributions to township life or culture- such as: Driskell House honoring Harry Sperling Sr., Mrs Dorothy Irene Wisniewski honoring her father Walter Wisniewski Jr., Mrs Cynthia Weilerhonning her mother Esther Weilerman etc.- currently Driskell Annex & Driskell House 1st Floor continue live under new name: Woodbridge Manor apartment complex following donation from Harold Haggerty ownerve since 1990 named Woodbridge Manor IOA

Plainfield, New Jersey is a small town located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The population was 37,965 at the 2010 census. settled in 1784 as a farming community on the plain between Bound Brook and Neptune Rivers. In 1812 it became part of the newly formed United States of America after its acquisition by Spain from France. It became an important port on the Atlantic coast and had a significant wool trade until the early 20th century. After World War II Plainfield grew rapidly as a result of its location within commuting distance of New York City and Philadelphia. Today, Plainfield remains an agricultural town with a strong industrial base including two large steel mills, one manufacturing aluminum cans and plastic bottles, and one heavy machinery manufacturer.
The Plainfield community was founded in 1786 by colonists from the town of West Plainfield, New Jersey. The area that is now Plainfield was part of the parish of West Haddam until 1868, when it became a township. The name "plain" comes from Powhatan and "FIELD" is an old English word meaning "land." By 1800, most of what is now Plainfield had been annexed by Newark. In 1814, the U.S. War Department built Fort Lee on the border of Newark and Morris County as part of General John Ralston's effort to secure passage for troops through the country into Canada after the Mexican-American War. As American forces grew increasingly important in World War I, fortifications were expanded and new barracks were built at Fort Lee including a hospital and post office building which are still extant today. In 1919, Fort Lee was renamed Camp Grant after General George C. Marshall who served as Secretary of War during World War I and helped make America victory possible in that conflict. In 1947, Johnson City began to form when parts of Newark east of Hackensack merged with sections west of Edison Avenue to create a new city government entity known as City Government District No. 2 (CGD2). In 1970, GD2 was dissolved and its assets merged into that of River Rouge Township which later became plainfield Township in 2004.
