Plainfield, New Jersey is a town located in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. The community was first settled in 1784 by Dutch farmers and their families who named it Plainfield after the forested plain around which they drove their cattle and hogs. The name was changed to Plainfield Township in 1834. In 1881, the township became part of Union County and the village of Plainfield took form from portions of both townships. The town has a rich history that can be found throughout its buildings, streets and landmarks. One of the most famous residents of Plainfield is abolitionist John Brown who made his home there during the early 1800s. He was arrested and tried for treason in 1859 but acquitted after refusing to let guards transport him to prison on horseback. Brown's house still stands today as a museum open to the public. Another prominent figure from Plainfield is Representative James Ahern (D-Newark). Ahern served in Congress from 1983 to 2001 before being elected Mayor of Newark in 2006. He was re-elected on November 3rd, 2007 and remained in office until January 14th, 2011 when he resigned due to term limits set by sponsors in his party caucus over his support for same-sex marriage bans across New Jersey. In addition to its rich history, Plainfield also has some beautiful architecture including two Masonic grand lodges built between 1915 and 1918: one called Temple Emanuel Lodge No 927 (near Main Street) and another called Temple Israel Lodge No 592 (on Court Road). Both lodges are open to visitors today as are several other buildings throughout town that were once used for various purposes such as schools or churches prior to becoming commercial properties; these include First Baptist Church (1875), Post Office (1907), Griggs Drug Store (1920), Elmira Savings Bank Building (1922), Dairy Queen Parkade (1993), Hudson Valley Guild Hall & Museum(1981) and Stroudsburg Area Community School District Headquarters building(1990).
