Plainfield, New Jersey is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 34,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name " Plainfield" is derived from Dutch: plaatje meaning "plain." In 1792, Eliakim Potter, an Englishman who had settled in Newark and became one of the first white men to own land in what is now Middlesex County, named his estate "Plainfield". In 1814, Colonel John Stevens purchased 640 acres (252 ha) of land east of Newark in what is now Plainfield Township. He built a large home there which he called "Stevensburgh". Stevensburg later became part of Princeton University. During World War II and afterwards the area surrounding Plainfield exploded with manufacturing activity due to its proximity to the war plants of Camden and Newark. The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture since then. The current downtown core was built during the 1990s after a major renovation project that renovated all 9 blocks between Clinton Street and Broad Street into a high-quality shopping center with over 100 stores and restaurants including Macy's and Sears as well as several banks and other businesses. The township seat until 1907 was East Brunswick before that seat went to Cherry Hill because East Brunswick was too small formansioned by military needs during World War I while Cherry Hill served as Headquarters for both local commands Posters 3rd Infantry Regiment (later 2nd Infantry Division), First Army Corps under General George Smedley Butler; Control Element for Coast Guard District Atlantic; Headquarters for Air Force Region 1 headquarters at Dover Air Force Base; Fourth Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment FA from 1941 to 1945)

Plainfield is located in the northernmost part of New Jersey, and has been a community for over 350 years. The town was named for Plainfield Township, in what is now Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The first settler in Plainfield was John Fenton, who arrived in 1772. At that time, the township consisted of only three blocks of land. The area now known as Plainfield was first settled by Germans in the late 18th century. In 1795, Dutch settlers moved into what is now Plainfield from Paramus and Hackettstown. In 1824, a group of English farmers donated land to become Plainfield Township. At that time, it included all of present-day Somerset and Union Counties. Today, most people in Plainfield are descended from those early settlers or their descendants. For many years after its founding, Plainfield functioned as a small farming community with few other amenities than its own churches and schools. However, over time the population began to grow rapidly due to both natural growth within the township as well as waves of migration from surrounding counties。 By 1920, there were more than 1,000 residents living in plainFIELD alone! Many businesses were founded during this period: local grocery stores (including Clifton's), a post office (later renamed NJ Post Office), an insurance company (NJ Life), two car dealerships (Ford and Chevrolet) and four banks- three local and one national- among others (). Many residents also worked at these businesses during their day-to-day lives; some even kept families together while working at different companies throughout the day (). Today’s society has benefited greatly from steady immigration rates (.9% per annum) which has resulted not only in swelling populations but also new opportunities for everyone involved: newcomers have assimilated quickly into American culture (), creating an increasingly diverse mix () with grandparents still doing muchof home cooking () while entire generations take on career paths (). Despite these positive trends however (); recent demographic shifts can lead to tension if not managed properly ()); problems such as gentrification (), suburbanification (), rising crime rates etc.) continue to plague our communities (). The Plainfield community was founded in 1795 by farmers from New York. The area that is now Plainfield was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1814, the United States bought the colony and renamed it New Jersey. The town's first mayor was Nicholas Loeb.
