At that time, there were only six people living in what became Plainfield; it had a total population of 22 between 1800 and 1830. The first school in plainfield was opened on November 5, 1835 by Rev. John Woolridge with twelve students; it served as an agricultural academy until 1840 when it became an high school under the name "Century School." In 1855–1856, plainfield erected its first courthouse – also the first structure west of Trenton – and began hosting regular elections to municipal government which continued until 1905 when they were moved to Newark because that city had become too populous for Morris County to support without taxation levied against its citizens who resided within its boundaries - this act repealed section 2 of the Morristown Charter which allowed for township elections held outside Township limits. In 1903, Plainfield erected its own waterworks system through horse-drawn wagons drawn by four cats or pigs each pulling a cart filled with water from a well near First Avenue and Demarest Road eastward across Lennox Road into Town Lake where it circulated through open vaults before being discharged into River Delaware at Great Falls after being treated by three men using baskets made from planks nailed together with cloth strings while walking back downgradient; this event launched what would become known as "The Water Wars" between PlainFIELD and Newark over control over their share ofTown Lake's resources which ultimately led to Newark annexing PlainFIELD in 1916 following years' legal wrangling culminating with incorporation into that city eighteen months later despite protests from both municipalities about registered voters moving away during World War I – both municipalities lost property tax revenue due to losses incurred by nonresidential Zoners who left for military service - however since registration ceased following World War II all zoned residences within City Limits are now required to update their address so their residency status can be verified prior to buying or selling real estate within City Limits

Plainfield was founded in 1755 by Colonel Johnstown, who bought the township from the Lenape. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the route of the Great Lakes and its natural resources. In 1824, Plainfield became a part of New Jersey. The early townspeople were farmers and traders. They built homes along the Delaware River, but soon realized that they needed more space to grow crops and build mills. So they began development of what is now downtown Plainfield. By 1830, almost all of what is now downtown had been built. In 1847, when New Jersey was created as a state, Plainfield became one of its first townships. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when it became an industrial center with many companies such as Koppers (now Pears Corporation) and Carrier Corporation being founded here. Afterward, it slowly lost its nickname as "Plainville" because most people found other places to live more appealing than in a small town near the capital city of Trenton NJ
Founded in 1764 as Plainfield Township, Plainfield became a county in 1838. It was renamed to its current name of Essex County in 1909. The township and county are located on the eastern edge of New Jersey's "Second Level" metropolitan area.
