Pine Hill is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,139 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Pine Hill was Nicholas Pinchot who arrived on October 14, 1781 and established a spring near what is now Main Street. He named his tract Pine Hill after the pine tree that he saw growing near his home. A post office was established in 1814 and remained in operation until 1865. In 1837, John Daugherty settled on the east side of town from where he ran a general store and distillery until his death in 1864. His son Daniel Fenton Daugherty continued this business until it closed in 1890. Other early residents included James Treadwell (1811-1893), Michael Ryan (1815-1894), Samuel Hickey (baptized December 12, 1792), John Madden (1797-1868) and Cornelius Shea (1800-1885). Pine Hill became an incorporated village on November 3, 1903 under Act No. 9 of 1903; it merged with nearby Caldwell Township on January 1, 1905 to form the new township of Middlesex County which still exists today as a separate municipality within New Jersey. On July 15th of 1945 – just one year after World War II ended – Pine Hill's ZIP code became 97374 when portions of Caldwell Township were annexed by Union City to form that city's boundaries

The first European settlers were farmers, who developed land into small villages and farms. By the beginning of the 19th century, pine trees had become a common commodity in New Jersey because of their resistance to pests and diseases. In 1814, General James Kapp established Fort Lee on the banks of the Monmouth River at what is now called Pine Hill Village. From this pointforward, Fort Lee would be one of Kapp's most important military posts in southern New Jersey. In 1835, following Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Inkerman Creek, Fort Lee became an important center for Reconstruction after America's collapse during the Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many white Americans moved to Pine Hill while African Americans remained behind to work on plantations until they were given their own land following World War II. Today, there are few reminders that Pine Hill once played a significant role in American history – except for some abandoned homes and factories located near modern-day Route 78 South). However, if you wander through any old neighborhoods or drive down Old Bridge Road (Route 9), you'll see evidence thatpine trees once lined both sides of this road – cutting through what is now urban development and making this part of town something close to nature again.
Pine Hill was a small, unincorporated community located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It was once a part of the Salem Township and had a total population of about 350 people in the 1920s. The community closed its doors after World War II when most of the residents left for postwar jobs in bigger towns.
