In 1835, Samuel Morse established a sawmill in what is now West Morris Township and called it Morseville after his father-in-law's estate thereabouts. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1851 but Morse rebuilt it three years later and continued to operate it until 1923 when he sold it to Oliver Hazard Perry Associates Inc., one of Newark's largest business interests then known as Associated Merchants Trust Company (AME). Pine Hill was first settled by English colonists in 1664 as part of Hackensack Township. The name "Pine Hill" is from Old Dutch hollen meaning "hollow" or "slope". The town's original location on a high bluff overlooking the Delaware River made it an ideal site for military and naval stations during the Seven Years' War and later during World War II as well as for post-war development including the establishment of Philipsburg Aeronautical Laboratory in 1949. In 1965, Pine Hill established itself as an incorporated municipality with full voting rights under state law; this followed complaints by residents over inadequate services available to them within the township limits. In 1984, mayor John Fenton became the first African American to serve as Mayor of Pine Hill when he was elected unopposed after previously serving on an advisory board that included then-mayor Annette Herrera and Borough President Edwin Rosenthal. According to the 2010 United States Census Bureau, Pine Hill had a population of 5,521; its racial makeup was 98% White (of any race), 1% African American, 0% Native American, and 0% Asian Pacific Islander. Hispanic or Latino residents constituted 2% of all population.
