Phillipsburg is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,755 at the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is located on the Delaware River and includes parts of the towns of Easton and Westmoreland. The Dutch name for Philipsburg (from "Hertogenbosch") was "Huguenoisch Loonaardsestedt." In 1689, English colonists renamed it after James Phillips, 1st Earl of Orford (1639-1702). James Phillips had arrived in America as an indentured servant with his family in 1685 and became one of the first white men to set foot in what is now Hunterdon County. He was rewarded by King George III with an estate at Phillipsburgh Township. James's son John Phillip II (1692-1768) also received an estate at Phillipsburgh Township; however he died before receiving it. His son James Phillip III (1744-1814) built a large home there which remains standing today - still used as a public house by the townspeople. He also founded Philipsburg Academy which still operates today as one of New Jersey's leading secondary schools. In 1802, when President Thomas Jefferson moved from Virginia to Philadelphia to take up his new office, he took along his personal physician Drury Colville with him – this was the first time that such a prominent figure had ever traveled across state lines without being accompanied by either a bodyguard or coachman. After spending only two days inPhiladelphia, Jefferson returned to Edwards' Ferry and began commuting daily between Philadelphia and Washingtonvia boat down the Delaware River – thus beginning what would become known as Federal Highway Administration reports #1 through #15 on March 10th of that year: "A Road from Washington to Philadelphia", &c., were published herewith". The original alignment of U.S.-Route 50 running through Philipsburgh would continue unchanged until 1959 when Interstate 95 was constructed cutting into its eastern border just south of town limits; both routes are now part of Route 922 . Phillipsburg has seen many changes over its history including three times becoming part of Huntingdon County during different periods: In 1795 when Hunterdon County was formed from portions of Middlesex and Monmouth counties following the US revolution In 1812 when Huntingdon County split off from Hunterdon county following William Pitt's victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Yorktown And finally most recently in 1920 when Huntingdon county merged with Burlington county following World War I

The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1764 from Wales and were known as the Welsh Colony. In 1776, Philipsburg became part of New York after the British Invasion of America. On July 4, 1776, a group of Patriot General Washington's army marched through Phillipsburg on their way to battle with British forces at Saratoga (now Saratoga Springs). The town was renamed Philadelphia on November 7 that year in honor of George Washington's victory over British forces at Saratoga. Phillipsburg experienced significant growth following its incorporation as a municipality in 1854. It became an important coalmining and manufacturing center during the 19th century; many factories closed during the Panic of 1893/94 because of increased competition from other industrial centers in America. However, since World War II has been when Phillipsburgh’s economy has seen some consistent growth with several businesses expanding into new markets while still providing quality jobs for residents. According to the United States Census Bureau, Phillipsburgh had 9,753 residents as of 2010: 7% African American or black; 2% Native American or Alaskan Native; 3% Asian; 1% Hispanic or Latino ; 5% white alone
Phillipsburg was founded in 1781 by General James Monmouth. The town became a borough in 1834 and then a city in 1907. It is the county seat of Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
