The first settler in Phillipsburg, John Cronin, arrived in 1814. The town began to grow rapidly after it was designated as the county seat in 1868. In 1916, Phillipsburg became an incorporated village and then a city in 1967. Today, Phillipsburg is home to many of Morris County's largest businesses including JBG Reynolds Corporation (the largest employer in Philipsburgh), Wachovia Bank & Trust Company, and Mastercard International Incorporated. The history of Phillipstown begins with one man – Patrick Byrnes – who built a cabin on what is now State Route 20A near present day Philipsburgh Township Hall. Byrnes named his property "Phillipsburgh" after his native land of Scotland where he had resided for several years prior to coming to America. His Cabin served as the nucleus around which development took place throughout much of Morris County until finally being replaced by the current community center building completed in 1936-37 by local entrepreneur James Sweeny who had also erected the original high school building back when it was first constructed thereabouts.. Over time some other early settlers followed suit such as Michael O'Brien who settled on what is now State Route 9 just east of present day Philipsburgh Square before moving westward into what are now parts of neighboring Chesterfield Township and even Asbury Park while others simply established themselves along present day Interstate 95 or within easy access via Routes 32 or 54 which ran through much of North Jersey at that time... The growth rate continued apace with another group consisting entirelyof Ulster Scots Settlers arriving from Northern Ireland during Prohibition Era only to establish their own business within days following its repeal however most notably Tammany Hall Saloon owner John Fenton who opened up his establishment soon afterwards next door to Mr O'Brien’s farmstead becoming one of earliest known liquor stores inside modern Phillstown limits developing into today’s well-known “Fenton’s Tavern” still operating today under new management providing both function and entertainment services thereto… With rapid settlement came residential subdivisions/ developments such as Arlington Heights located immediately north side Of town along I-95 During prohibition era this area developed into one of most exclusive neighborhoods outside New York City Limits containing millionaires mansions funded primarily by bootlegger Owned enterprises operationally operated out front including reputedly world famous Mayzie's speakeasy where celebrities like Sammy Davis Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt And Bing Crosby appeared nightly during Prohibition era making Phillipsburgh not only an important commercial center but also home away from home for many prominent Americans including future Ulysses S Grant himself back then Assistant Secretary at War responsible for general management and supervision over all American forces during World War II serving concurrently concurrently alongside later legendary First Lady Mia Forbes resideing nearby today among others

Phillipsburg was founded in 1720 by Captain John Phillips and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Hill. The first permanent settler in the area was Nicholas Hill, who built a small cabin on the banks of the Delaware River. He named the town after himself, and it continued to be called Nicholsburgh until 1801 when it became Philipsburg. The mainstream of New Jersey's history began here with John Beall starting a ferry service from Sayreville to Elizabethtown in 1675. In 1732, Samuel Adams established a mill at White Marsh which also grew into a leading commercial center in the region. In 1750, George Washington moved his family from Virginia to what is now Philipsburg and started an agricultural society there that produced farm corn for local markets. The first school in Phillipsburg was opened in 1768 by Reverend Nathaniel Gorham. By 1800, Phillipstown had about 350 residents and three churches - oneMethodist and two Presbyterian - as well as several stores and a post office. In 1801, following the admission of Rhode Island as a United States state, Philipsburg became part of newly created Providence Township (now Jameson Township).
